Is this dangerous?
      #1008518 - 14/09/12 05:20 PM
Just a quick question.

My monitors are hooked up to my Focusrite interface which is connected via firewire to my Macbook Pro. After a session of recording/mixing/listening, I go to do something else and I'll often sleep my laptop but shutting the lid, generally to save power. I believe that in this case the firewire connection is lost.

If I then wake the laptop up by opening the lid, the firewire reconnects and I get a nasty loud low-end boom through my monitors. I tend to switch the monitors off, but occasionally I forget, hence the boom...

I'm just wondering if this will have a damaging effect on the monitors? Any ideas?

Thanks
Dave

As a Dave myself, may I offer the suggestion that any unsolicited noises are generally unwelcome. Dave

Indeed, I figured as much, the question remains though... is this actually damaging to the speakers?

The answer my friend is blowing in the wind. I suggest that common sense prevail ...we cannot hear this noise so cannot make an informed decision. What I can tell you , as implied before , is that any unwanted pop or boom COULD cause damage over time or MAY destroy a cone in one big bang , depending on severity of noise. Dave

I suppose it's always safest to assume the worst in such cases. I don't want to find out the answer when it's too late! I've now put my extension plug in a more accessible place, so I'll just switch the speakers off before reconnecting.

Thanks

Dave

Get into the habit of always powering down the monitors first. Even if you go for a quick break.

Cheers,

Dave

Or just leave the laptop on and don't put it to sleep!

I recommend putting a sticker on the laptop lid which says: "Now switch off the monitors". Problem solved.

I love this. A low tech solution to a high tech problem. I think I need more stickers in my life.

I own a Liquid Saffire which has some basic monitor controls including a mute which helps, it also has an ani thump circuit which should avoid pops when I'd accidentally power up/ down the Interface and Monitors in the wrong order. It doesn't always work 100% tho.

But in my room I have overcome this by making a star configuration for my power with switches to logically divided groups, 1 for each rack, one for desktop (laptop, DSP, HD's) and one for Monitors only. This way I control the sequence, all of the time. (Make sure you use clear marking on all of the switches)
