Logic Compressor

Hi Guys (And Gals if there are any)

Running some experiments with logic compressor.

Here is the results of me attempting to even out the volume of a kick drum that varies in volume using the logic compressor.

The 2nd track is the bounced compressed version.

I have experimented for a while now and can't seem to get a good result. I can even it out in volume but not without squashing it so its pretty naff sounding and the attack of the kick just doesn't seem to want to lower in volume either even though I have the attack set at 0.

Just thought I would post here and see what you guys recommend I should try?

Have you tried the different compressor types? The old Platinum algorithm is probably my least favourite compressor type in the Logic comp.

Also, expand the hidden parameters and check the soft clipping feature - try those too.

It's difficult to suggest things without hearing the audio and playing with the settings.

Perhaps try changing it to peak instead of RMS.

I think that might make the compression kick in a tiny bit quicker and iron out those big transients at the beginning of each beat.

The other thing to try would be to use the limiter function as that will definitely shave those transients right down!

I'd use level automation first.

Try using a limiter after the compressor to handle the peaks separately. Alternatively you could also use a second compressor with a faster attack.

If you want a steady consistent kick drum, I'd replace it with a sample of the best sounding kick drum hit you recorded in that session.
