Summing to mono..Avantone mix cube.

Hi there,
I have Logic Pro and a Motu 828 MKII.
I have just purchased an avantone mixcube.
When I'm summing to mono do I simply send my mix to a mono aux in logic and then to any of the outputs on the 828?
Does it matter if the output is balanced or not? The avantone is XLR so I assume that it should.
I know this is basic as basic gets but I just want to be sure that I'm not missing anything.

Yep that sounds right...Just make sure that whatever routing you use, you're definitely getting a mono sum, not just one side. Easy to test. And then it's really a question of working out how you're going to easily switch between the two.

It's a good investment.

An alternative solution, which is sometimes more practical, was described in Mike Senior's Book Mixing Secrets, and involves constructing a dedicated cable that sums the outputs from a headphone output to feed the Avantone's input.

Using this special cable you can select the headphone output, or simply plug the lead into a headphone output to route a summed mono signal to the Avantone.

my local music shop made me one for £5, very useful.

I trust that has the appropriate resistors, and not simply a Y-cable connecting the two channels together.
