Beyerdynamic 990 vs 880

Dear all
I have tested the Beyerdynamic DT 990pro and I'm totally satisfied
with it's sound and frequency response. But environment noise disturbs me. Do you think if
a semi-open headphone like DT 880pro can give me the same frequency response with some
noise attenuation?

Semi-open headphones give almost no ambient noise attenuation. If external
noise is a problem, I would suggest the Sennheiser HD-25-1 II (Handbook Here) hugh

I use the BD DT990Pro and DT770Pro. The latter one I use for tracking/recording and in
situations where I want the minimum of noise from outside. The 990's I use mainly when
mixing or just listening.
As far as sound and response I am totally sold on the
990's, which is why I opted for the 770 as well for tracking. The sound is nearly the
same. The difference is most noticable in the lower frequencies. To my ears the bass is a
bit tighter and thicker in the 770 (which makes sense seeing the design). Obviously the
990's also sound a bit more open and wider to my ears. But the general sound and response
is very very similar to me.
So, if you like the 990's sound, and look for
something similar with environmental noise attenuation, my suggestion would be to check
out a pair of 770's.

Thank you 2M. But I've actually tested the 770pro too and it's not enough for me because I
really need that wide bass and even sub in 990pro while designing say a kick or a bass.
I'm just eager to know if there's a choice that has 990's lows and 770's isolation.

Which impedance of DT770 did You try?
the 80ohm version does not sound the same in
bass freqs as the 250 and 600 ones.

Good point, the impedance makes a lot of difference. In anycase, for sub and bass response
I grab my 770's before I go to the 990's, so your experience with them surprises me a bit!
To me bass in 770 is tighter and stronger than the 990's.
Curious to know what
you tested.

It would appear from the website that the DT770M has a different frequency response to the
DT770.
That was certainly my experience with the DT770M 80 ohm version - an increased
level in the upper bass freqs changing the tonal balance coupled with not much deep bass
compared to the 600 ohm DT770 which I have used a lot in PA sound work.
I can't
comment on how the DT880 sound in comparison as I have not heard them, but the DT990
phones are quite good sounding in the bass even though they are open.

"Though" they're open? I thought we should say "because" they're open. Most audiophiles
and the most expensive and headphones specially designed for monitoring are open. It
really sounds weird to me that you are on closed headphones side for monitoring. My
thought is openback headphones sound better but they lack in isolation. And I'm looking to
find an alternative with fixed isolation but the same quality.

when i bought my akgs my mates all said closed back was the best for mixing and
recording/producing cos youre hearing the "full sound" with nothing getting away from you
through the cups and less interferance from outside noise... im no pro, but i got the AKG
K171 MKII's and theyre pretty superb to say the least.

let me say that this is not
true! Because the most natural condition is to here the sound from one side of the
headphone driver like any other physical oscillator. Closed headphones might reflect the
sound and you hear it twice! There might be also phase problems. Of course most modern
headphones tend to absorb the driver reflection than reflecting it back to avoid all
artifacts above. So the "full sound" you said, believe me,is a myth.
