Advice please: connecting TR8XL's to home amplifier that has "speaker wire" outs
      #1057140 - 12/07/13 08:38 PM
Hi - title says it all, pretty much. One TR8XL is about 7 ft away from the home amplifier, the other one about 15 ft.

The TR8 XLs have two kinds of balanced inputs (XLR and T/S), and an unbalanced.

I guess I need to buy/make some kind of connector from speaker wires to one of those kinds of inputs? … balanced input being best? … connection close to amplifier so the signal runs the greatest portion of the distance via a balanced line? … or is all that thinking bass-ackwards?

Thanks for any help/suggestions -

Hi, as far as I know, the TR8XLs are active speakers ( built-in amplifier) so the the last thing you should try to do is plug the output from a different amplifier into them.

As Arco said - the monitors have amplifiers inside them - so do NOT, under any circumstances, connect them to an amplifier.

You connect them directly to the line level output of your mixer.

You are 100% right Arco! I checked, and the amp (Yamaha RX-V640) also has RCA outputs as well. Connected the amp to the TR8XL's via those and there is signal from both. Thanks for helping me figure that out (it was a matter of triple reading the amplifier manual).

(Edit: Thanks to you too, John Willett, I didn't see your post when I made this one). Even if I had wanted to fry my TR8XL's by connecting to a powered amp I couldn't have, as they only have audio connections (RCA, T/S balanced, XLR), nothing for speaker wires to go into. I should also say I connected them via "Zone 2" which must be unpowered, as they require running the RCA cables into a separate amplifier before then running to the speaker monitors.

Thanks again!

ALEXIS! STOP!

As has been said, your speakers are active - expecting to receive a line-level signal. Do not under any circumstances try and connect your amp speaker outputs to these speaker inputs. The magic smoke and the nasty smell from all the connected devices are quite likely.

Just what is it you're trying to do? There could well be another way...
