Monitor advice
      #1082408 - 08/01/14 09:49 PM
Yo, My room is about 10 feet by 7 feet and about 7 feet high. I was going to upgrade from my Genelec 8020 to KH120, but on reflection and given the size of the room, do you think I would be better hanging onto the Genes (which I might add are translating better now that I have put them in the middle of the room) and buy a set of Shure headphones (you know , the expensive ones) rather than try to flog a dead horse by putting quality monitors in an unflattering space. This may leave funds for some Equator D5 which may be a better option. So...what would you do? Dave

Dave, you're better off with the AKG 712s or similar and keep what you already have.

Zuke's been raving about the 712's every since he bought them

IIRC the phrase "moist at the gusset" was mentioned

Regarding monitors - the KH120A are, IMHO, the best around at their price bracket and you have to spend a lot more to get better.

The Equator D5 are also about the best in their price bracket - and - being co-axial monitors do have a very good stereo image and depth.

Regarding headphones - the good ones to trust at an affordable price are the Sennheiser HD600 and 650 and the AKG K702/712 - you pays your money and makes your choice. All are good and probably about equal and it's down to personal preference.

The HD700 and HD800 are a lot better - and a lot more money - but I'm glad I coughed up for the 800 and a Grace m903 as it's an excellent combination - but c. £3k.

To my ears the K701 and K702 sound identical. The 702 has a detachable cable.

It will be while before I'm thinking of changing, but I'd really like to hear the 712.

Come round to my gaff Elf and test them out. You won't look back.

If you are going to that, maybe I should come as well and bring my HD800s as well

Should be fun - sort it with Elf, as he's the one who has to come a long way, and let me know and I'll pray it all ties together when I'm free.
