Latest mix job...
      #988129 - 18/05/12 09:04 AM
...just got released. Check it out, if you're interested. I didn't have the greatest raw tracks to work with (most of the work turned out to be repairing dodgy recordings) and the client had VERY specific ideas of how he wanted things to sound, but I think it turned out quite nicely. Feel free to disagree!

I think you have probably done a very good job but the whole project sounds to 'self produced' to my ears. A classic example of when a good producer could have made some better decisions in the recording process and the end result who have been sooooo much better.

Just my thoughts...

Agreed!

He's thinking about starting an album, and if I have the time, I'll probably be producing it for him. Sparklehorse is one of his major influences and I think he took the whole lo-fi thing a bit too far. Some of Mark Linkous' stuff was actually very well produced.

Thanks for listening!

I've just had a listen to these, proper songs and well performed put my efforts in the shade, well into the dark ages to frank.

I am not a professional mixer/producer/engineer etc, I just go by my ears and they tell me your work is flawless and certainly musically/stylistically, quite a refreshing change from the more formulaic representations

Hmmm, I wonder if they are hiring at MacDonalds!

Thanks, although apart from a guitar and a glockenspiel or two, I'm not actually responsible for the music;-)

P.s. with regards to your thread and the Mac quote, don't let it get to you. Art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder, and as you quite rightly state, as long as you make a good impression on one person, it's all worth it. Just keep plugging away. I know I did and still am. I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination and am still learning the art, but I get a little bit better with every project I take on. Got a punk band to mix next. That's gonna be fun!

I'm in a punk band; The Dead Betas. That's if punk still exists and it doesn't simply mean 'talentless musicians'. Let us know how you get on!

PS I personally found nothing wrong with the mix. Thought the ending was probably a bit abrupt though I guess that's not down to you if you only mixed it.

Here is a link to one of the punk songs I recorded and mixed. It's been a bit of a guerilla project, as the whole thing was recorded very roughly and quickly in an igloo-shaped bunker where they rehearse, using whatever mics were to hand, more as a test to see if anything usable could come out of it. Speaking of mics, placement was pot luck, as there was no control room or facility to monitor while recording, other than on a pair of old headphones they had lying around. The band was, however, pleased and convinced enough to now want to record an album's worth of material using the same methods, so job done, I guess. I'm fairly pleased, given the conditions and apart from my overly zealous use of Slate's FG-X (just got it when bouncing the 'master'...).

So, that's that! Thanks for listening to my first experience with 'punk'.
