I've been looking at Western Digitals 7200 RPM 500GB Scorpion Black Hard Drive for a Macbook.

Can anyone recommend this ? what are the best brands ???

I've been trying out some Samsung Spinpoint M8 drives over the last few weeks for data storage. They seem pretty fast.

Yes, I have the same western digital in my Macbook Pro and can recommend it. Certainly noticed an increase in performance.
