Original Studiomaster 16-16-2 help on tape returns
      #995517 - 30/06/12 02:37 PM
I have an original Studiomaster 16-16-2 which I have got working by building it a new PSU.

It's working well, but I can't figure out how you patch the tape returns. The 16 groups have a tape button, but the only connections are the outputs - no corresponding inputs???

Does anyone know how this was connected, or better still know where I can get a manual or block diagram?

This is NOT the mark 2 (for which there is documentation on Dancetech) but an earlier version, which although similar has different patching arrangements.

I've tried Studiomaster, but they don't even offer the courtesy of a reply and their 'website of old product manuals' does not work.

Anyone remember this one?

Not the 16-16, but here is the 16-4 manual which looks like it is very much the same set up.

It makes reference to the line inputs for the tape returns.

A friend of mine once had this desk... If I recall correctly the idea was that the multitrack tape machine was connected to the channel line inputs, and mixed down through the channels. But for monitoring when tracking nad overdubbing those line inputs could be routed through the groups via the tape buttons.

Thank you both - that makes complete sense.

The manual is very similar indeed, and as it's unlikely that you would want 16 (or in my case 20 as it has an expansion) line inputs, patching into these would make sense.

Off to give it a try!
