Pads

So I have the option to use a pad at the mic or at the desk, one is a 10db pad at the mic the other is a 26db pad at the desk. Is there a preferred method or does it not really matter which one I use. Obvious they will pad out a different amount of sound but if they were the same would it make any difference or would there be any advantages in one over the other?

Sorry it's a 20db pad on the desk.

It is usually better to apply pads (and filters) as early in the chain as possible... Which means if the mic has a pad then use that first.

But I would probably just use whichever is most convenient at the time and for the situation.

Also, it depends on what is being overloaded. If the mic is being overloaded, then there is no point in applying a pad at the desk.
