Cubase 5 - how to get rid of unused events or ignore them when doing crossfades?
      #996709 - 08/07/12 07:05 AM
Apologies in advance if this is a bit of a dumb question.

I have multiple tracks recorded in a project in cubase 5, with multiple takes/punch-ins everywhere. There could be from just 1 take to 5+ stacked on top of each other on the same track.

What I'd like to do is do crossfades everywhere that's necessary, which is a whole lot of places. The problem is, when I try to do a crossfade, it incorporates the audio from the unused takes underneath("events" is what they're called, I believe?). Going through all the tracks and getting rid of those unused takes seems like it would take forever, so I'm wondering if there's an easier way. Whether it'd be to automatically remove the sections of events that aren't on top, or to crossfade only using the events at the top. Or, if there's nothing like that, suggestions on the most efficient way of getting rid of those unused takes underneath. It's seven tracks with an hour of audio each, so it seems like it would take some time...

It may not be the answer you'd like, but... I suggest you be a lot more tidy when sorting out your overdubs.

The way I work is to edit each clip so that they *don't* overlap. That way I find I get a better cross-fade.

If you switch on lane view it may help.

Yeah, I guess that's all I can do at this point. I was just wondering if there's any way to get around it, but I guess that was a long shot. Thanks anyway!

Apologies if I'm misunderstanding, but in the Audio >> Advanced menu in C5, is there a "delete overlaps" command as in C6?

Unfortunately that doesn't work quite the way you'd want it to. If there's two takes on top of each other, it won't necessarily keep the take that's currently on top. It seems like it just keeps whichever one is first.

OK, sorry about that, never having worked with C5 I didn't know how similar/dissimilar it was to C6.

One last thought - in C5 are you able to use the "Show Lanes" command (maybe default F7) to vertically spread out your takes, and then tell Cubase which portions of which takes you are interested in keeping (i.e., "select" the right takes)? Maybe with that knowledge, C5 will keep the take you want when you apply the "delete overlaps" command, rather than what sounds like you are describing is simply keeping the first take made ...

I'm curious...what on earth were you recording requiring an hour of audio (per track) with punch-ins?

I don't think this will help. In C6.5 we have the 'Comp Tool' to help with this type of thing, but it isn't in C5.

Show lanes would be helpful, but...the takes aren't all on separate lanes. Often they're stacked on top of each other on the same lane. Don't ask me how that happened. A lot of cutting and pasting took place to get everything sounding tight.

And to answer the question about what it is - it's a music album. The guitar tracks are fairly cut up - there's a lot of layering and everything has to be perfect. And I'm no phenomenal guitarist.
