Alesis XTC Reverb : manual anyone ? and odd grounding for case?
      #997639 - 13/07/12 02:09 PM
hi

Ive just got hold of an old alesis XTC reverb from the 80s, £20! I cant find a manual online anywhere, only for the Alesis XT (which seems a bit different) does anyone have one at all? scan/pdf whatever, fine.

And its also got a very strange jack plug half attached (it doesn't appear to be properly soldered) hanging off the case? any ideas what if anything im supposed to do with this?

Many thanks, regards

Ben

I would imagine that wire is connected to the sleeve of the jack plug, and was used to provide a ground connection... but the question is, was it do provide a ground for another but of kit, or was it to ground the Alesis? I suspect it was to provide a ground to some other (double-insulated) device.

The pictures don't reveal enough information, but does the Alesis have a three-wire mains lead with a mains safety ground, or is it a double-insulated device. I hope it's the former... but you never know. It would be well worth opening up the mains plug to make sure that some idiot hasn't removed the earth lead!

Wow, many thanks hugh.

Ill take another photo as its hard to explain, but someone (idiot?) has replaced the mains plug with a mini plug, that goes with a mini extension. a 'power distribution system' alledgedly.

i was going to replace with a normal plug anyway, and extend the lead.

Hmm. ill be back with a photo.

edit, ok here it is, phew, ground attached.

So (A) i can easiliy replace with a normal plug (although it might be useful to have a rack with these mini plugs, save space. Although youre stymied if you need to move, or plug something else in.)

(B) it looks like that plug was used for grounding another bit of kit, and can therefore be removed?

Many thanks, regards

Ben

The 'mini-plug' looks like a normal IEC plug. They are often used when gear is powered from mains filter units or rack mount mains distribution unit (MDU). You can plug it into a normal IEC lead if you must, but replacing it with a 13A mains plug is probably a better bet.

And yes, remove the earth wire bodge from that back panel screw.
