Any tips for backing vox to sit better in my mix
      #999161 - 21/07/12 09:44 PM
Just trying to get my daughter interested in a bit of singing, so got her to have a bash at doing a small backing vox part on a song im working on. She is really enjoying, prob have to re record one of her lines as its not quite there but I cant seem to get it to sit in the mix very well and wondered if there are any obvious things I could do ? You can hear it here:

Its the last half of the song in case you don't want to listen to the whole thing !
I have still got quite a bit to do on the track, just in case you think the backing vox are the least of my worries

Thanks

My 2c

1. If you haven't already, compress them. Use a ratio of around 2:1 and a fairly short attack time. Adjust the threshold to achieve 6 db reduction and use gain makeup.
2.Scoop out some mids (500hZ region) to create space for the lead.
3.Record some unison harmonies (3rds and 5ths).What you have now is really a 'call and answer' type line which is OK upto a point but proper harmonies might be better.
4 Push the BV's out wide.
5 Judicious use of tempo sync'd delays as send FX can also help create space.
6.A touch of tuning wouldn't go a miss also.

These aren't backing vocals. What you have is a second lead vocal. As such it needs to be as strong as the main lead vocal - not sitting 'in the mix', but riding over it. The way you have it set right now sounds like a lead vocal mixed too quietly.

If I was wanting to create 'backing vocals' for this song I'd be layering them and adding harmonies - also getting them actually back the lead vocal - not adding.

Then come the compression/EQ tricks to place them behind the lead vocal!

Yeah. It's either an ad lib, in which case bring it up and see if you can get her to sing it with a bit more conviction. OR it's a sort of airy bv thing, in which case layer it...add some yourself too...so, say 4 of what you have now, 4 harmonies and 4 low octaves from you, perhaps with 4 low octaves of the harmony too.

It's another good song.

What Jack said.

Personally, it strikes me as more of a call/response sort of thing, which requires the female vox to be nearer the male vox in level. Which is maybe a re-take for a more strident sound. Maybe put it in a slightly different space - stereo spread/delay. You could certainly use this take to see if that works, though, and then re-track if it's what you want.

Or, as Jack suggests, layer some of your own BVs in and go for a wide airy sort of sound, which would also work nicely.

As it is, it's kinda falling between two stools...

Also... yes, another nice track. The production side of things is coming on nicely too. Good work.

Check out King Creosote & Jon Hopkins "Bubble" for an excellent example of M/F vocal integration - Youtube Link

I was going to suggest looking at the integration of Evan Dando and Juliana Hatfield in some of the Lemonheads stuff (eg 'My Drug Buddy'), though not sure they fit together quite like those in this song. Worth a listen, though!
