Readers' Rigs

Hello all,
As those of you who've read Performing Musician magazine will know,
we run a regular feature called Readers' Rigs, where readers send in photos of... er,
their rigs, and write a short piece on what they've got and how they use it. So far we've
featured a bassist's rig, including instruments, amps & effects etc., and a
keyboard/FOH/lighting rig (from a particularly imaginative keyboardist/singer who built
everything into one rack).
You may see where this is going... Do you want to be
featured? If so, post a photo of your rig (whatever that may be — lighting,
venue/touring PA, keyboard, etc.), and if it looks interesting enough, I'll get back to
you with a PM and you'll be featured in the mag. For whoever we decide to fetuare, there
will be PRIZES!
So don't delay, get your photos in and WIN WIN WIN!
Cheers,
Chris
PS How do you like the new mag?

Although I don't work there as a staff member any more (having gone freelance) I could
give you some good stuff on 53 Degrees in Preston; which is a 1200 and 400 capacity venue
where I designed both lighting, sound and video rigs.
PM me if you want.

you've got two minutes to get that lot off during changeover!! how long does that stage setup take to rig? -you need to be introduced to the
19-inch rack and pre-wired rigs!

If you give me till the 23rd of May I can take picture of our rig...
Its for an
electro band (myspace.com/touchband) the rig consits of a 2x MacBookPro's running Logic 8,
Synths, Keytar, and a few other treats. I program the show live in Logic 8, and the patchs
use automatic midi switching to route the other guys instruments correctly.... its rather
cunning...
(but we have 2 laptops incase one crashes and dies! :P)

Nah I
understood what you meant, just having a bit of fun, or trying to. Considering how I feel
that was likely much more funny to me than anyone else at the moment, but lots of various

I saw this thread after I posted a thread requiring some advice on our brand new Touring
setup.
I'am gonna take the chance to get into some more detail here.
The band plays either fast punk-rock or reggae-dub (depending on how we feel at
the time and the venue).
The instruments and backline varies a lot since none
of us have settled completely but it's from a choice of the following:
Guitarist 1:
Custom-made SG with EMG active pickups
Custom-made Telecaster
with dimarzios
JCM900 100w 2x12 (open-back) Combo with 2x12 (closed-back) marshall
extension cabinet
Vox Time-machine delay
Boss SD1
Jim dunlop wah wah
Guitarist 2:
Fender Vintage 52 Telecaster Reissue (dub sets)
Gibson
Voodoo SG (punk sets)
Mesa Boogie 2 channel triple recto
Epiphone Socal 4x12
Cab
TC Electronics Nova Delay
Eletro Harmonix H.O.G.
Bassist:
Warwick Fortress Bass w/ active EMGs
Cheapo Fender Jazz copy with Basslines
quarter-pound pickups
EBS Neogorm 350W combo
Drums
4-piece Yamaha
stage custom set w./ various percussion items
Miced up:
3 Beta 58s on
vocals (2 guitarists + drummer)
Guitar cabs miced up with sm57s
Toms + Kick +
Overheads : Mics from the Red5 Drum-Mic kit (actually bought after a favourable review on
SOS)
Snare: Beyerdynamic M201TG (favourite on snare)
Bass using the EBS DI
(which sounds awesome)
A selection of other mics just in case :P
Ran
into a Behringer Xenyx XL2400 Desk,
FX1 and FX2 from the desk feed a Lexicon
MX400
Mon1+2 and Aux1+2 are used as monitor sends for 4 individual mixes.
Drums are grouped to sereo in group 1+2 and group 3+4 depending on the venue and setup
are either stereo Vox or mono Vox and Mono Guitars (yeas , I don't really believe in
stereo for live bands that much :P)
2 x DBX 266 Dual compressor/gates on the
drums (kick,snare,tom,floor tom)
1 x Samson S-Com 4s quad compressor/gate used for
anything else that might require some compression depending on how it all feels on the
night, usually Bass + Vox and occasionally the stereo group of the drums
The
monitor sends feed 2x db Technologies Opera 205s (one for each guitarist) and 2 x Mackie
SRM450s one for the drummer and one for the bassist.
The main outs of the
desk go to a Driverack PA ran in 2x4 mode (low/high only) which feeds 2x db Technologies
Opera stage 61.18 18" subs (1 left and 1 right) and 2 x db Technologies Flexsys F212
(2x12" + Horn sattelites).
All this using a 32/8 Multi (the 8 returns allow
me to keep the driverack next to the desk)
The Behringer desk actually has a
separate main out (Main Out B) with independent level control which runs to my Focusrite
saffire plugged into a MacBook Pro for recording the set.
and that's it
Edit: I'll update with photos in a few days ...

I'm late to the party I suppose, but it's worth a try. It's not huge, it's not
magnificent, but it's a 4-person rock band + DJ system, so it gets the job done.
Right now we have:
Alesis
Multimix 16 ->
Behringer Dual 15 Band Equalizer ->
Behringer
Comp/Limit/Gate ->
Peavey 2/3-way Stereo/4-way Mono Crossover ->
QSC
EX4000 (channel A bad, using channel B) -> Highs
Carver PM700 -> L side Mon, R
side Mids
Behringer EP2500 Parallel Mono -> Subs
Yamaha S12e -> 2 on
Highs
Kustom KSC215H -> 2 on Mids, 1 on Monitor for drummer
Gemini GSM-1500
-> 1 on Monitor for guitar/singer
Our plans in the future are to purchase
an EP4000 from Guitar Center (we have a $400 check to spend there), use the left over
money + money we may get from selling two bad amps to buy 4 new HF drivers for all 4
KSC215H's, put the EP4000 on subs, put the EP2500 on mids/highs (it will run a 2 ohm load,
did it for 8 hours in my house at full volume with my car subs ), and put
the Carver + S12e's on monitors. It's not pro quality, it's not the most expensive rig,
but it works for what we need.

Those downfills are necessary as the inner R5's are spitting straight into each others
horns and none of the R5's on the bottom row seem to have enough tilt to make the first
rows. let alone anone befor the back of this room. Which makes me wonder why the top row?!
lol! (sorry, just worked with F1 too much. Niche shop though

New guy here, from across the pond in Canada. I have a Yorkville setup. 4600W
FOH 800E for monitors 14 can light setup. Pics from this weekends
gig. Luxury of a nice big stage. Mission Control: Of course,
we don't always have the luxury of a big stage. Last weekends gig for example. 12'x8'
stage!

I wish I took more pictures, but here's the FOH of a rig we managed for a theatrical
production.
There were 10 vocal actors and a small orchestra of piano, keys,
bass, drums, strings and brass.
Here's what we used:
PA:
Mains, D&B Q7 tops
with Q-Subs powered by 2x D&B D12 1200Watt amps
Not a whole lot of power
compared to some rigs, but for spoken word we needed clarity rather than volume, and the
D&B Q series delivers... and then some! We've worked with Meyer and EV for similar
projects but the D&B rig is fantastic.
Monitors, 2 EV 600 Watt wedge
monitors powered by a Crown Macro-Tech 1200 amp.
FOH:
Allen & Heath
GL2400 Console
Rane ME60 2-Channel Graphic EQ
Yamaha DDL3 Delay/Reverb
Behringer MDX2200 Compressor/limiter
10x Sennheiser EW300 G3 Digital
receivers hooked up to 2 Senn' ariels via BNC
Mics:
10x CPC Head-set
mics*
10x Sennheiser EW300 G2 Transmitter-packs
3x Shure SM57
2x Audix
i5
2X Audix UEM81C
1 RED5 RVK7
*A word about these CPC mics. I've
used Sennheiser counterparts and these CPC mics are a FRACTION of the cost but sound very
nearly as good. Amazing performance from such a cheap mic.

I have been on this site many times for all the great advice but this is my first post. I
am the full time sound engineer for an 8 piece band called Portabello, we are based in
Derry Northern Ireland. The line up is drums, bass, keyboards, guitar,
trombone, saxophone, trumpet and vocals. Plus 4 of the guys have mics for singing backing
vocals. The trumpet player sings lead in a few but 90% is Bronach, our female singer. Compared to the rest of you guys I have the bare bones of what I need. Just enough
and no more. 2 x Cerwin Vega Intense 252s 2 x Cerwin Vega Intense 118s powered by 2 x Numark Dimension 4 Amps. 1 run in stereo to
power the 4 ohm tops and the other in bridge mono powering the bins which are 8 ohm, but
daisy chained to drop to 4 ohm. 1 x Behringer FBQ 3102 This I find
great for keeping feedback out of the mix, however, if there is no feedback, it stays
completely flat. I dont use it for shaping the sound. 1 x Allen & Heath ZED
22FX I frickin' love this desk - a full pint of beer got spilled on it one
night during a gig, I tipped it sideways and got most of the beer off and wiped the rest
with a cloth....the sound didn't so much as flicker!!! For monitors 1 x 100 watt Laney amp (don't know the model but it is a little mixer head with 3
channels) 2 x 300 watt Laney speakers (don't know the model of these either) These monitors are average at best, they get the job done but just barely. I can always
get the right monitor mix and adequate volume but the sound is a bit of a let down. The
speakers I put on tripods, I gave up on wedges about 2 years ago. Sidefills are so much
better, easier to hear at half the volume. Mics 3 x SM57 Betas for
the horns 2 x SM58 Betas for the lead vocalists 3 X SM58s for backing vocals 1 x SM58 on the guitar cab (Roland Cube - I love this amp, sounds amazing without
deafening the rest of the band) 1 X AKG D112 for the kick (soon to be replaced by a
D6) 1 X SM57 for the snare 2 x e604s for the toms. Misc 1
x Behringer Ultra DI20 for the keyboard player (who has 2 keyboards) And that
is pretty much it, boxes of mic leads, speaker leads and power boards and a case full of
every kind of adaptor but other than that.....that's it! No compressors or
limiters....cuz I have never needed them. It helps that the band I work with are all topn
notch musicians using top notch gear. No volume wars at all. Th whole lot was
bought brand new for around £3,000 about 3 and a half years ago. I have been gigging flat
out this whole time and haven't had a single failure with any of my equipment. Im more
than happy with my FOH sound, gonna spend some money soon on improving the monitor sound,
maybe 2 SRM450s or even 350s. If I had one gripe about the FOH sound, its that
I have never got that low down punch from the kick drum. I can get close but that normally
means flashing into the red on the bass amp. And I dont like to do that. Thats why my gear
has lasted so long without breaking. No red lights....ever. Any comments would
be greatly appreciated since I'm gonna have to start replacing things before they finally
do give up the ghost!!! The bass amp being first on the agenda !!! Suggestions please.

I bet that guy didn't get any [ ****** ] off the soundman for that. It's always us
drummers who get told to "just use what's there".

Here's my newest upgrade, a custom order trailer, I picked it up on April 27th and I've
done 3 gigs with it so far. It's a 5x12, and it's low enough to fit into my garage which
is the most important feature. That way I can leave it loaded, & ready to go. And in my garage: Love it! It used to take 45 minutes to load my
gear from my garage into the truck to go do a gig. Same with after a gig, it's so much
nicer! Been playing around with the pack so far. I didn't have any E-Track clips or
strapping for the first two gigs, so everything laid flat so it wouldn't shift around etc.
I was able to get some clips & straps. I need more but this was my pack
today: (I'm pulling those 2 unstrapped cases out when I get home) Threw my snake on top, deciding on an
appropriate case for it. Also have to remove the conp stickers and paint a "lights" label
on the case since that's all that's in there now. Strapped a Unity15 & an LS800p together on
each side. (would separate be better) I made sure the subs were right over the axle. And the rear misc stuff.

Here are a few pics from the festival i spent the last 6 days at. I was mixing
monitors/FOH on the live stage The desk
is a DDA Q2, drawmer and klark teknik compressors, lexicon, TC and Yamaha effects, KT
DN360 and 3600 eqs. The only drawback with this desk is that the left and right mix buss
is summed to mono when feeding the matrices, hence you have to us a pair of sub groups as
your master and feed the matrices from there! a bit of a pain in the butt! After a week out bush it is so great to come home and have a shower!!!
