Here's a (kinda blurry) picture of my setup: Note the
'Good, bad and ugly' gear selection and the space and acoustic treatment limitations that
come from using the box room of a rented flat...

Thanks Paul and Red! Getting used to just a few hours sleep again - I think we must be
programmed to forget from the previous time! To get back on topic, I am
attaching a few quick snaps of my room - not an ideal shape, as I used to be in a studio
in central London but the building was sold to develop as flats - so I grabbed the
opportunity to set up and work from home! Its quite ergonomic and I've got 8
realtraps up which tidy up the sound to a quite amazing degree.. Cheers! Paul

Ok here's my humble setup, I make electronica entirely in the box. I recently
moved into a smaller room and
thinking of changing my monitors to something more appropriate as they are too bassy for
this place...

I'd LOVE one! For the
oboe sample alone, I still hear it everywhere. It doesn't really sound like an oboe, but
it sits so well in just about any mix, in any genre... You've got one? Can I borrow it?

Hehe. Just sold my 2500XS and 2500RS, so only have the PC88 left these days which has
served me very well as m master keyboard for ten years. Built like tanks, gorgeous bits of

You bet Red, I bought mine in 1999 in
LA when I was doing the ASCAP workshop (I couldn't afford to buy a decent controller at
the time over here!) and its still going strong!
I have never found a better

This is a very
nice set-up... But how can you work like this? This is more of a rhetorical question,
I'm sure you manage very well. However, how can you keep reaching across the keyboard to
your controller, and not do your back out?
You see, studio ergonomics have been
on my mind quite a bit, and the way most of us seem to work - or are forced to work -
appears quite impractical. There is the inevitable fixture of the master keyboard (if,
like most, you happen to work from a keyboard). Then there are the LCD monitors that get
in the way of the monitor speakers - sonic reflections and all. Some also work with a
control surface. Finally, there are the various bits and pieces of hardware.
It strikes me as odd that manufacturers seem to ignore how their stuff gets used in real
life. They end up designing hardware that certainly looks nice in a showroom or in a
catalogue, but by the time you have set it all up and connected, you realise your arms
don't stretch long enough to reach everything comfortably. If, like me, you spend 10 or
more hours at a time behind your keyboard, this gets to be a real concern. The point
being, I think all control surfaces on the market - the decent ones anyway - are too deep.
The master keyboards, too, are too deep, to be used in the way you do, which is in front
of a control surface.
Why doesn't somebody built a controller that is only as
deep as the faders, but almost as wide as a keyboard, so that one can reach everything
easily? Would that be such an unreasonable request?

Having long arms helps.....
In all seriousness,
the reaching is minimal - the PC88 is a VERY shallow master keyboard, and I tend to sit in
fairly tight to the desk. Thus I can reach all of the MCP without moving, and only the
very top of it requires me to stretch my arms to full extension. Likewise I sit there for
hours upon end (it's my job after all) and I have been adjusting constantly for the past
12 years to find the "perfect" working environment... and this is about as close as I have
ever got. In fairness, reaching up to the top level of the MCP is no worse than the top or
bottom octave of the keyboard...

Well, for the first time in public, here it is:- Notice how much space I save by having a concertina for a MIDI
controller instead of a keyboard. Note also that although there are screens, keyboard,
mouse and interface for a computer there is no actual computer. Since I only use it for
mix down it spends most of its time elsewhere. Chris

Nice, is that a recent pic?
But seriously (and I *am* serious now, even though I had way too much Heineken yesterday
- my apologies to the mods for OT post ), since
most of us work in a very similar fashion, I would have thought that, by now, the main
manufacturers of master keyboards would have come up with an option to have transport
controls and faders integrated into the keyboard. Wouldn't that make a lot of sense,
ergonomically? Every keyboard I can think of has so much wasted space to the left and
right of the main controls, easily enough for implementing transport buttons, scrub wheel
and faders.

Yes, that's an Aeron chair.
They're around £800.00 new but you can pick them up secondhand on eBay for about
£350.00. That chair has since been moved to my study as I now have a green leather KAB
ACS chair in the Studio. Cost me £900.00 but I sit in it all day, every day so it's money
well spent!

wonder where fingerpicker (the bloke who started all this) has got to these days?
No pix of my studio as it is permanently in a state of change and also because it
looks like a total tip most of the time.
But I am now down to 3 PCs, an Amiga
1200, the A&H GS3V, two Fosted D90`s, Tannoy System 6`s with a Quad 405 and a pile of
outboard for the actkchewul recording bit.
Have recently crammed a semi=home made
edrum kit in there as well.
PCs have Emu cards well 2 do and the third one I am
trying to sort out something cheap that will run ADAT lightpipe to replace the elderly
Gina in it at present.
Embarrassingly I am now up to 5 monitors.
And I only
use the PCs for VSTis!!
Forgot to say the PCs are networked and the
glue that holds all the MIDI stuff together is a wonderful old Akai ME80P.
Even manages to talk to my Amiga, the hard disk recorders AND the desk at the same time.
