Ebay and Readers Ads Scam Alerts.

Okay.
As a result of the previous Poll thread here's the Thing itself
Item 1) How it will work.
This thread will be a locked sticky. Moderator
and Admin team members will update it as often as is reasonably practicable. you tell us
about an item, we'll give ita quick look, and then assuming it's found to be suspicious,
it will be added to the list here, if you view this thread the latest items will be at the
bottom of it... over time, items that are expired in relevancy, will be deleted or
amalgamated into a reference post.
Item 2 )
How to Notify Admin or
Moderators of a suspicious item.
If you come across an item in Readers ads, or
Ebay, or indeed, anywhere else that we Gear junkies frequent, that is suspicious, and your
initial investigation bears this out, then Send the User "SCAM ALERTS" a PM with the gory
details.
All the Moderation and admin team will be able to log in as "SCAM
ALERTS" and check the PMs, then do the necessary leg work.
ITEM 3) The Rest of the Stuff.
We'll look at it as soon as we can, and if it looks
dodgy, We'll Post the details in this thread.
If your item fails to be posted,
it will be because it has either already closed or been removed, or it failed to be
sufficiently obviously fraudulent. In my case I WILL be asking questions of sellers, and
will base my opinions on the manner of their replies, and other data i can dig up in a
sensible length of time.
I will also be notifying the issuing authority (be it
Ebay security, or SOS readers ads admin or whatever) of these items before I post the
details.
Please bear in Mind that this is a free service, and that we all have
other work to be doing as well, so responses may not be instantaneous, indeed they are
quite unlikely to be so.
This method aims to keep the available data
relevant, and minimise the unfair or malicious slander that could result in legal issues
or damage to innocent reputations that is unwarranted.
As to the Poll
Results, 62% of you Voted for this method, so I hope it satisfies as many of you as
possible.
Best regards to all

Avoid this like the plague.
if you geta reply like this, DO NOT DEAL WITH
THEM.
Supplied By Forum Admin. How are you doing.Hope everything
is going fine on your side.According to my client,he has already sent the cheque out
to you(it will arrive by mail to your location).I made him understand it's urgent so
he sent it immediately i gave him your details. So the payment should arrive in a
short while from now.And once you get the payment, all other arrangments will be accomplished. So Just be close watch out for payment.
But there was a little
problem/mistake which i guess we can be well handled with understanding. When i
contacted my client to now maybe the cheque as already been sent,i got to know that
there was a misinterpretation while sending the cheque.According to the instruction
i gave him,he was suppose to have sent you a cheque of £120 out of the money he was
oweing me.But instead,he sent a cheque of(£1,530).It was a terrible mistake and the
cheque is already out for delivery to your location. He claimed that he thougth
i said he should send you a cheque of £1,530(which was the total sum he was oweing
me)and not just £120.But i know very well that i told him to send just £120,but i
guess he didnt get it straigth.
But that should not disturb how own
purchase. The deal is on and we will get through it.What will happen is that ,once
you get the cheque you will easily cash it and forward the extra($1,410) directly to
my secretary in cash immediately so as to make arrangement for shipment. It will be
sent to him Via WESTERN UNION MONEY TRANSFER.Originally,i had in mind to collect the
money from him and use to fix some other things personally. But since, its now coming to you now,i guess i can be assured in you that you can handle it with
trust and have the excess money sent to my secretary.Hope all is well.Mail me back
immediately,to let me know that i can trust you to handle everything well.I will be
expecting your mail asap".
Best Regards Mrs Sheri Baldwin
NB Make sure you mail me back immediately you get this message. And also please confirm your phone number, i tried reaching you by phone but i didnt get through.
Be careful out there people

Hi, eBay item 3768014047
1. This is an exact copy of one Manny's had on
aBey a while back- even the photos! 2. New seller & bidders ID kept secret.
This is identical to another recent scam with another 02R about a month ago.

A user got this as a reply to one of his Readers ads items.
Be aware that this
isa variation on the classic Nigerian419 scam.
This was in reply to a readers'
ad - house for sale:
Dear Friend,
This
letter may come to you as a surprise due to the fact that we have not yet met. I have to
say that I have no intentions of causing you any pains so i decided to contact you through
this medium (ads) As you read this, I don't want you to feel sorry for me, because, I
believe everyone will die someday. My name is Motala Bello, a merchant in Dubai, in the
U.A.E. I have been diagnosed with prostate andesophageal Cancer that was discovered very
late due to my laxity in caring for my health. It has defiled all form of medicine and
right now, I have only about a few months to live according to medical experts.
I have not particularly lived my life so well, as I never really cared for
anyone not even myself but my business. Though I am very rich, I was never generous, I was
always hostile to people and only focus on my business as that was the only thing I cared
for. But now I regret all this as I now know that there is more to life than just wanting
to have or make all the money in the world.
I believe when God
gives me a second chance to come to this world I would live my life a different way from
how I have lived it. Now that I know my time is near, I have willed and given most of my
properties and assets to my immediate and extended family members and as well as a few
close friends and Schools in the UAE.
I have decided to give alms
to charity organizations, as I want this to be one of the last good deeds I do on earth.
So far, I have distributed money to some charity organizations in the U.A.E, London and
Ireland. Now that my health has deteriorated so badly, I cannot do this my self any more.
I once asked members of my family to close one of my accounts and donate the money, which
I have there to charity organization in Bulgaria, they refused and kept the money to
themselves. Hence, I do not trust them anymore, as they seem not to be contended with what
I have left for them.
The last of my money which is the huge cash
deposit that I have with Financial Firm Abroad .I will want you to help me collect this
deposit and dispatched it to charity organizations and let them know that it is I Motala
Bello that is making this generous donation.
I am writing this
from my laptop computer in my hospital bed where I wait for my time to come. I pray that
God uses you to support and assist me with good heart
God be with
you,
Motala Bello.
NB: I will appreciate your utmost
confidentiality in this matter until the task is accomplished as I dont want anything that
will Jeopadize my last wish. and Also I will be contacting with you by email as I dont
want anybody to know cos they are always around me. Please try send your phone number to
make communication easier.
be careful out there
folks.

Right , this is getting really really silly....
This last week, Every single
serious level console, (DMXR100, Neve, etc) with just 1 quite notable exception,
(Euphonix Cs3000) was a SCAM
Current std tip offs.
1) Anything
that's a private auction.
Generally speaking this is now a favourite of the
Scam artists, as it prevents Concerned parties form emailing the bidders to warn them of
the nature of the auction
2) Zero Feedback Obviously everyone's got to
start sometime, but basically Any high value Auction from a Seller with 0 feedback or new
seller status should be avoided...
3) Even Feedback isn't certain now, as a
number of Seller ID's have been hijacked. So be careful, check out previous feedback,
email them and walk away at the slightest whiff of something funny.
4) Terms
and Conditions If they won't agree to accept Cash and allow you to collect the goods
in person, or deliver to you on a C.O.D basis, then don't buy it. simple as that. NO
excuses. if a seller ONLY accepts Paypal, Western union, Nochex, or other electronic
payment, and won;t accept cash, Don;t buy it. They may be Legit, but it'\s simply not
worth taking that risk.
4B) NEVER go on your own to a meeting for
collection.
5) NEVER accept payment for any amount other than the auction end
price + P&P
6) if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.
Be
safe, be careful, and don,t get caught out.

Recent updates From a Forum member (thanks) _________________________________________________ Ok, Recently on ebay
a new user has been attempting to sell an EMS Synthi AKS with no reserve. Some slight
anomolies in the advertisement caused some suspicion. Firstly the guy comes from Truro,
yet he placed his location as London. Secondly I asked a couple of questions in order to
see if he would meet up and accept COD, and the condition of the unit. REPLY:
Hi, You are right I am located in Truro, UK! I can make the shipping to your address
as I work 12-14 hours in a day and I don't have time to meet you. The Synth is in perfect
working condition. Best Regards. --- slightly lacking in detail there, and the
refusal to meet up was very suspicious. Further more, 2 hours before the auction was set
to end it looks like eBay stopped things. "If the item was removed by eBay, please
consider this transaction cancelled. If anybody contacts you to complete the sale, please
ignore the request." But, surprise surprise the user contacted me: HIS E-MAIL: Mail me if you are still interested by the EMS SYNTHI AKS Analog Synth
for EURO 1100 I closed the auction for a buyer but he can't make the payment until 2
weeks from now. We agreed to find other buyer. Make the payment on my name and
address via western union Name : Mark Jonson Address : 61 Lemon Street City : Truro Zip Codes : TR1 2PE Country : UK Total price including
the shipping is 1100 EURO( I will pay the shipping taxes and you will pay for the money
transfer ) Soon as the payment is done email me the scanned copy from the receipt or
the Sender's name and the MTCN from W U . I will verify the transfer online and if is fine
I will make the shipping to your name and address. You will receive the tracking no. Let me know --- Hmm, so he's a new user, lied about the closure of the
auction, only accepts WU, and refuses to meet up. I've since posted an e-mail saying that
I'll only do COD... but have not yet recieved a reply. I wouldnt seriously meet up, but
it'll be intersting to see what other excuses he'll come up with. If anyone by
the name of Mark Johnson (jhgh78 on ebay, jhgh78@yahoo.com) sells something like this again then
watch out. __________________________________________________ Basically the stock advice applies. this is a text book scam case, and should be
avoided . Also from another user __________________________________________________ Hi again Came across
a Korg Triton Extreme being sold on Ebay again. New user / seller has zero
feedback, user id's kept private and from London........think this is another Triton scam.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=38089&item=730796
3572&rd=1 Regards __________________________________________________ Updates may be a bit
sporadic at the moment, as there's only so much time in a day, and I have many other
responsibilities, not the least of which is earning a crust.........

Also This post in the forum Quote a
forum user:
Watch out for someone named Brian Nichol with the email
address paul_jakes@hotmail.co.uk
Offers to buy goods, says he will pay cash into your account and arrange courier uplift.
But in fact he pays in a cheque and arranges uplift before the cheque bounces.
I've notified Admin as of this

09/06/2005 Edit Reply Quote Yeah, this goes on
pretty regularly. I've seen a few people selling Access Virus TIs shortly after they were
announced, I've had people want to pay me more for an item I was selling then expect me to
give the difference to their agent in Africa, and I've gotten a number of emails telling
me that I need to fix something with my personal information or I will be banned from
eBay. Just the other day I got a warning that my bid had been cancelled on an item I had
never bid on. I don't know how all the scams work; some are clearly trying to separate
honest people from their cash or merchandise, some are probably attempts to get valid
email addresses and financial information from gullible people...who knows? eBay has a
mechanism for reporting such scams, but I'm not sure that anything actually ever gets
done. I suspect there are too many for the eBay people to keep up with. You
should always, ALWAYS, be careful dealing with eBay. When you get an email that seems odd,
NEVER click on any of its links. When I got the notice that my bid had been cancelled for
item # XX, I opened a new browser window, navigated to eBay on my own, then did a search
for that item number. It was some teapot or something that I've never seen before in my
life. I use a Mac, so I don't have to worry about viruses or spyware, but I still would
never click on any link that a suspect email wanted me to use. Lots of great
people selling great things use eBay, but I suspect there will always be scams. There's
little harm in being too careful. baward new member Joined: 04/02/2003 Posts: 205 Re: Heads up on ebay scam [Re: Free
Trade Inn] #140449 - 10:27 09/06/2005 I send
everything suspicious (that means pretty much anything which claims to be from 'Ebay' just
to be sure) to spoof@ebay.com or spoof@ebay.co.uk which is their catch-all spam centre
email address. Ben it still happens a LOT....
Be careful.... Further Notes. From: John Williams Notified Ebay already, thought it might be worth sharing for the sheer cheek of it...
check out his Items For Sale... http://search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQsassZwatson2230 Multiple

As a general rule of thumb just avoid anyone who even mentions the name Western Union. I
had one guy try scamming me to which I told him I had reported him to the police etc...
Anyway, the reply I received should go down in history as the most ridiculous. Its
amusement made the guys existance worthwhile.
Basically, I received the
following email addressed from: FEDERAL BOUREAU OF INVESTIGATION
It even came with a very pixellated FBI logo
header.
---------------------------------------------------- Dear sir,
We are International Federal Boureau of Investigation (FBI) . Our Company waiting
from you .. The information from were we can arrest the guy. From were office he go to pick
up the money . For we can arest him , we ask you to give him all information about the
payment but that information must be available. When he will be in the #Wstern Union
office to pick up the money , we will cath him ..
Thank you for your
cooperation .
Director : Gerrard Saun from FBI LONDON.. Thank you . ------------------------------------------------------

And here's where the scam hits: "Thanks for the honesty you have put in
from the day one of this purchase and your open hearted in this transaction.
Just want to inform you about the Urgent news I had from my associate today.....I just
received a call from my client letting me know that a terrible mistake was made in the
amount stipulated on your payment, Which was made out of {National Irish Bank} instead of
£500 he went on and issue the sum of £5000 on the cheque. I think it's a typo Error
from me so please try and understand it was due to my shut side view, and I have not been
chanced to call for somedays now cos my phone was bad but i can use my other phone now.has
you will be receivnig the payment be today or tomorrow. My client was suppose
to issue two payment out of my funds with him, One to you and send the other to my
Personal assistant who is taking care of my daughter aswell for the medical treatment and
also to make an arrangement for the pick up,but he made the whole to you instead of
sending just £500 for the item and £4,500 to my Personal assistant for medical expensess
and the agent fees. And this can't be rectified from my end, because right now I'm not
in the UK.
I will want us to carry on this transaction without further delay,
I'll really appreciate if you go on and deposite the banker's draft in your account to
avoid further delay and get back to me letting me know the amount of days it will use in
clearing from your account so i can tell you what to do from there.
I'd like
you to go ahead and cash the funds, then keep your own part of the funds, am also ready to
give you extra £300 for the bank charges, after this, you will have to send the balance
on the banker's draft to my Personal Assistant so he can arrange for the medical bills of
my daughter in the hospital and also make an arrangement for the pick up as soon as you
cash the funds.
We have spent to much time on this transaction and will not be
adviseable to waste anymore time on this purchase again as we both are mature business men
who deals internationally and this is a very small issue i think we can surtout bettween
ourself.
I have spoking with my client that mistakely sent you the over payment
about the mistake and he made me understand we can go ahead and have the Bankers draft
cashed in any bank in the UK since the bank draft is issued from a UK bank.
I
really do regret any inconviences this might cause you, you can call me as soon as you get
this message or reply back with a message in my email.
This is my number
+447031941239 it is a UK roam Number. You can find a copy of my Picture bellow this
message.
I will be waiting to hear from you.
Once again, i'm really
sorry for the inconviences this might have caused you. And you are free to deduct the
£300 as promise.
Thanks for your usual cooperation, I await your
urgent response,
Engr Tony Dave"

DME:L:RTQ:US:1also, i can't quite tell if that's a gibson, or a really
close ripoff. can anyone lend a better set of eyes towards the headstock? the seller
just says the following: We collected all our goods from our country's
authentic market. We are not the specialist, we don't know the exact condition of
the goods. As far as I known, it is new .it is be send to your country needs Shipping
cost:GBP180.00 ,insurance:GBP2.00 If you have any question please feel free to
contact us. I hope you have many fortunes and good health. sincerely wen mostly positive feedback, but pretty fishy. but that's a hell of a deal for a lp
standard or classic, if it is in deed such.

That's another common ploy. My wife runs a site for her dad selling Antique Clocks. She
was recently alerted to the fact that a number of her images and descriptions had been
lifted by someone purporting to be selling them on eBay!

Ok.. be aware of a guy with the email ScottFather1956 @hotmail and ebay name of
BobbyBlueMonkey
He is offering a Roland Jupiter 8 with Kention kit for a "buy
now" price of £200 but you have to buy 2!! Imaging someone actually having two to
sell.
Ok, that scam was easy to spot but I checked out his other items:
Apple 30inch screem, Korg Triton, some wierd modular synth (could be Russian), Sony
HandyCam... a hold load of stuff. Oh and DDrums too.
Usual, Western Union
money transfer scam.

I was one of the many victims of MC Boardman a few years back so I can only advise anyone
to be extra vigilant when dealing with "to good to be true" offers. If you part with your
cash, it's highly like you'll never see your money again. I didn't / haven't and the
police have been as much use as a bucket of sh*te chasing / finding this w*nker or even
keeping me up-to-date! It's been 2.5 years! Not a dickie bird!

You can get a refund of eBay fees if you file a non-paying bidder. It takes a little time,
but the process does work. It did for me in anyway, twice...

their email is the same, when people send mail via the ebay system, it usually reveals
their direct registered email address, and in this case they're the same .

Beware the "Second Chance Offer" emails which look like the real thing, except that
there's no link to buy from the ebay site. I think the graphics in the email were even
directly posted from ebay's site. If you reply (and I did...I really wanted
that DA-7), the second email will ask for personal information. At that point I
emailed the seller directly from ebay, asking him to confirm that he'd actually made the
Second Chance Offer. Guess what? He had not. Good luck! oxy

I've just been informed that the following PayPal-scam has started to rear its ugly head
frequently (again):
It works as follows: An e-mail is sent to your PayPal
e-mail account, confirming you've just paid for an item using PayPal:
Dear
[name], This e-mail confirms that you have paid NAME* (e-mail@name.com) $ [amount]
USD using PayPal.
This credit card transaction will appear on your bill as
NAME*
The address mentioned under 'Shipping Information' is most likely
unknown to you, so you're probably tempted to click the 'Dispute Transaction' link below
the sentence 'If you haven't authorized this charge, click the link below to cancel the
payment and get a full refund'
Don't! The link refers to a spoofed website
in Croatia: ebnc.cipet.ac.cr/coppermine/.us/cancel.htm
If you'd log into your
PayPal-account, you will notice that no such charge on your account (if all is well, that
is!).
*) This is likely to be the name and e-mail address you're using for your
PayPal account, so the message may appear authentic. It is not!

having two of them seemed dubious to me... so i googled his address and it turns up on a
brace of fraudster lists.
one of the listings has now been removed by eBay
themselves.
then there's the price... the fact that he puts his email address
on the listing... FB is from sellers... and doesn't reply when i ask to pay COD ;-)
i'd say 'be careful'... no?
...bugger, have i just done
myself out of a bargain..?
...double bugger, am i in court for libel..?

lure people interested into offline sales with his invitation to email him.
It's essential to contact sellers through eBays internal messaging system.
Also essential to look at feedback, selling patterns and current auctions when
considering buying off anyone. If something looks suspicious, confirm that it's not
before sending payment. There's lots of scams out there!!!

Seems like quite a few readers ads advertisers are being approached by someone using the
email address geo_willis07@myway.com and sending them a variation of the typical
scammer First Contact email. See example below: From: geo_willis07@myway.com
Dear
seller, I 'm interested in purchasing your advertised [your product will appear
here] and i will like to know the price if is okay by me.if I can pay with a cheque
drawn in your location. If this is okay with you do get back to me immediately for me to
arrange the payment. Concerning the shippment, my shipper will come and pick it up from
your location as soon as we seal this transaction. Do get back to me immediately with your
Full Name, Contact Address and Phone Number for me to instruct my client to make the
payment ASAP. Hope to hear from you soon. Best regards
Our
advice is to proceed no further with such approaches and ignore them, or you might lose
your shirt! Personally, I would ignore any would-be buyer whose email contains
reference to a "shipper" and then wait and see how they follow this up. If they are a
genuine advertiser, it should become apparent. Ian G

Hi all, I have this one too. Typical bad English, send me your address and I
send round some nice peolpe who will save you on your house-moving costs. Yeah right ! Just a thought, if you do get this one, remember they do not know your email
address as it is sent through the system. If you reply, you will be bombarded with
mulitple "phishing" emails. Also, if you are a PC user watchout as they will send you
one or two choice hidden applications that clock your key activity etc to get
passwords. The apps are hidden in "document" files and on the PC they are hidden/
disguised, not so on the Mac as they are quite easy to see. they usually look
innocent enough, like "Here are those files you requested" 'data.doc' Best
advice is to bin all such mail.

Best thing to do is throw a few
questions at the seller like, "can I view /try the goods before I bid?", "can I pay cash
and collect personally?", etc. If they refuse any of these, steer well clear...
I remember seeing an auction for a Fairlight, with no pictures, although they were
available upon demand, so I requested them... They were pictures of a Synclavier (pics
were actually from Synhouse a Sync restorer, who I know), so I played with the seller for
a little while. In a nutshell, he was adamant I was NOT to see the unit(s) until payment
had been made and cleared. He actually started to get irate.
Good luck! Peter

Did anyone see the huge SSL E-series on eBay recently, sat at £200 for days but sold last
minute for £8000 odd. Love to know how the buyer got on, the guy had no feedback, it was
a private auction etc etc.....

Scammers: close down their email account

We received this useful email from a reader, so we are passing on his tip to aid
others:
Thanks for your warning regarding the cheque/shipper scam
that currently operates. 1 day after placing my ad with you I received this mail which was
then followed by the exact pattern you laid out. Having recognised it I contacted the MET
as my local Police force and it turns out that there is some limited action that they can
take to at least have the fraudsters e-mail account closed down (I realise this is small,
but every little helps) Potential victims need to obtain a reply e-mail
directly from the 'buyer' (rather than through your site) and then forward that message
with the internet headers pasted in to this address - fraud.alert@met.police.uk . Below is an
excerpt from the e-mail I got from the MET. 'To find the Internet Headers you
need to look on the original e-mail that was sent to you. I have attached a Web link which
explains how to find them. http://www.johnru.com/active-whois/trace-email.html or if using a
Macintosh http://www.mind.net/hpage/omacheader.htmlOnce you have
found the Internet Headers you need to copy and then paste this information into your
message to us. This then enables us to trace the origin of messages and then if possible
close the Website or E-mail account down. Please note that without this
information there is little we can do to help stop this situation being repeated again and
again.' On no account should a suspicious seller give out home address details
(even if they really want to see a fraudulent cheque) as this could lead to burglary and
their goods disappearing. I hope that this info can be passed on so that as
many of these fraudsters can be stopped, or at least hindered, as possible.

The following email reads like a potential scam, and seems to have been sent to lots of
advertisers in Readers Ads, so I'm p[osting it here as a warning to TAKE CARE. Personally,
I'd give it a wide berth... Dear Sir/Madam, H & S International
Limited is an european textile company. We produce and distribute clothing materials such
as batiks, assorted fabrics and traditional costume worldwide. We have reached big sales
volume of textile materials in the Europe and now are trying to penetrate the UK market.
Quite soon we will open representative offices or authorized sales centers in the United
Kingdom and therefore we are currently looking for people who will assist us in
establishing a new distribution network there. The fact is that despite the UK market
is new for us we already have regular clients also speaks for itself.
WHAT YOU
NEED TO DO FOR US? The international money transfer tax for legal entities
(companies) in UK is 25%, whereas for the individual it is only 7%.There is no sense for
us to work this way, while tax for international money transfer made by a private
individual is 7% .That's why we need you! We need agents to receive payment for our
textiles( in money orders, banker's Draft, check or bank wire transfers) and to resend the
money to us via Money Gram or Western Union Money Transfer. This way we will save money
because of tax decreasing.
JOB DESCRIPTION? 1. Recieve payment from
Clients 2. Cash Payments at your Bank 3. Deduct 10% which will be your
percentage/pay on Payment processed. 4. Forward balance afer deduction of
percentage/pay to any of the offices you will be contacted to send payment to(Payment
is to forwarded either by Money Gram or Western Union Money Transfer).
HOW MUCH
WILL YOU EARN? 10% from each operation! For instance: you receive 7000GBP via
Banker's Draft or money orders on our behalf. You will cash the money and keep GBP 700GBP
(10% from GBP7000) for yourself! At the beginning your commission will equal 10%, though
later it will increase up to 12%!
ADVANTAGES You do not have to go out as
you will work as an independent contractor right from your home office. Your job is
absolutely legal. You can earn up to 3000-4000 GBP monthly depending on time you will
spend for this job. You do not need any capital to start. You can do the Work easily
without leaving or affecting your present Job.The employees who make efforts and work
hard have a strong possibility to become managers. Anyway our employees never leave us due
to our excellent work condition.
MAIN REQUIREMENTS 18 years or older legally capable responsible ready to work 3-4 hours per week. with PC
knowledge e-mail and internet experience (minimal) And please know that
Everything is absolutely legal, that's why You have to fill a contract! If you are
interested in our offer, please respond with the following
details in order for
us to reach you: NAME CONTACT ADDRESS PHONE NUMBERS AGE SEX
Thanks for your anticipated action. And we hope to hear back from you. YOU ARE
TO SEND YOUR REPLY TO MY ALTERNATE/PRIVATE EMAIL: sobat_tech_uk@yahoo.co.uk Very
Respectfully, Mr. President, H& S International Limited 102

Yes i
thought as much,I had 12 ads in the SOS ad pages and i had an email regarding all of them
with the same text from this guy,so thought it was far too hoky, given that he replied
exact, when most people tend to be short and sweet when enquiring
Heres the email cut and pasted from my mail box, sounds remarkbly similar to

I've had the same email - definately a scam. Not decided whether to string the guy along
for a bit. Some people must be desperate to reply to what looks like the majority of
adverts on this site!

Here's a follow-up email that this Garry Roland sent to another SOS reader who replied to
his initial approach: With thanks I acknowledge the receipt of your mail and
the contents were well noted...I am happy the Item is still available for sale and price
you placed is okay with me. I am prepared to offer you an extra £200 Extra to secure the
sale to me, so the total balance to be paid to you will be £500.
I am
actually buying this as a gift for a Neighboring Church in Africa for rehearsal an their
upcoming harvest next month. I have already arranged with my shipper for a pick-up at your
location after payment as been confirmed by you, I’ll handle the cost however. Pick-up
will only be done when you have money in hands ok?
Please let me have your Full
Details such as: Your Full Name Contact address and Post code including your
mobile and home/office phone number where i could get you anytime i feel the call is
needed so i can have my banker issue the payment {BANK DRAFT} to be sent to you as quickly
as possible...
Hope i can trust you on this sales, cause i am buying here
online for the first time and i hope it goes well for us...And also i will be sending more
than the asking price due to the shipment Cost cause i will want my private shipping agent
to come for the pickup of all my items in the UK...You will be sending the remaining funds
to my shipping agent through via western union or money gram so he can come for pick up
immediately okay !!!!!
I await your mail later today..!!!!!!!
Best Regards...........

have ommitted the guys Phone number just incase, but seeing as the person used the same
wording (apart from the **** which was where he mentioned the gear i was selling and the
listed price) Its got to be a hoax, this is not the kind of normal reply that
you get when someone enquires (genuinly) Anyone else had an of
these??? "Hello, am interested in your ******** which you
posted for sale on the internet. Do get back to me with the lastest offering price.i
will want you konw if is still is good condition. I will be looking forward to your
response.I can be reach via e-mail johnsonyoung_1@yahoo.co.uk or phone

That sounds like a scam to me. These scammers always seem to ask "latest price" and
"present condition", even though you state in the ad the price and condition... Well, I do
in anyway.

A bit of advice here to avoid buying anything from either "Jarl Wholesale" or "Jarl Audio"
on eBay (or the web). Although they initially appear to be UK based they seem to be a
front for a Chinese counterfeit goods operation. A Sennheiser EW100 radio headset kit
that I bought was shipped direct from China and turned out to be imitation kit with
Sennheiser logos, badges and stickers on and not at all what was shown in the advert. I
couldn't even see if it works as according to the stickers it is the wrong frequency range
for the UK.
The company have not responded to my emails.
I have
informed both eBay (no response to date) and John Willet - who is informing Sennheiser in
Germany of this lot.

I see these tw@ts all the time punting out fantoms and extremes
et al for stupid money, why dont we all form a bidding cartel (which there are loads of
anyway) and bid it up to 1,000,000 pounds straight away. Ebay ignore to a point but if
they see regular occurances of said million they close down accounts if fee's dont get
replied to as they are terrified of fraud allegations.. But if you are tw@t enough to think you will get a fantom x8 for £150 you deserve
everything you get! Lets fleece the fleecers, bid em up to a million+ Chris..

Another thing to watch for: check the seller's history. If it has been dormant for a
while....
Danger Will Robinson....
I saw a Kyma and an Apogee up
from an account that hadn't been used for over 3 years. You can't check their items to see
if they had been buying or selling shoes, colored golf balls, or whatever.
(also watch for 1-day and 3-day ads...)
best to all... Steven

I've recently been scammed by an e-bay user called name removed for legal
reasons. So do not trust this e-bayer at all.I paid £101 for a cd player which paypal
accidentally took 2 payments from bank for so I payed £202,then I was refunded by the
very annoyed seller like it was my fault.I clicked the mouse once and paypal sent 2
payments so its their fault. The he refused to send me the ce even though I had paid for
it.
Now after name removed ignoring countless e-mails me and paypal
have sent him asking for him to send the cd player or to refund my money,he still has my
£101 and is being given 9 more days before action is taken by way of the police.I have
looked on e-bay and he has now un-registered from e-bay in the hope that he cannot be
traced and will be able to keep the £101 of my money. But he is a verified paypal user so
the idiot has all his details including address and phone number on the paypal database
which means he will not get away with it and after 9 days, the police will be called by me
pressing charges against him for fraud.
I don't know whether or not this is
the kind of thing that this 'e-bay scam' section of this forum is for but if it is I
wanted to make everyone aware of name removed on e-bay as being a fraudster and
thief.
Semtex - general heads-ups are useful to alert other readers, but
there are always 2 sides to every story and your comments may land you in legal hot water,
and us, so I am removing them as requested by the other party - Forum Admin
This fraudster's e-bay name is name removed so do not trust him.The worst part
is he had a feedback score on e-bay of 100% then ruined it all when he decided to steal my
money.
We have been informed that you have been refunded both amounts, so
your comments are no longer justified. If this is incorrect, get in touch directly with webmaster@soundonsound.com, but for legal
reasons please do not post here about this incident - Forum Admin

Hello, I want to buy Hypersonic VST, so just checked out on 'Froogle'...someone on
Ebay claims to be selling it 'for PC only' for 10 quid. This is so far off the
'usual' retail price I thought I'd better let everyone know, and ask if anyone else knows
about the seller? Seller's name = linforddelivery91. Private seller, claims to have 20
Hypersonic v2.0 packages in stock, presumably new. Dodgy or not people???????? Cheeky

Sounds a little iffy to me- what with all the headaches we get with official software, in
terms of correct drivers, updates, etc , I'd be wary of buying anything that didn't come
from an official distributor/shop- you may end up with something that either won't work
(and no support from the seller), or, worse, something that screws your whole system
up. I reckon music software is in the same state as music CDs- if you want more
good software to be designed, or good music made, you have to be prepared to put your
hands in your pocket and pay for it. Buy the software, and buy the music. Ripping off
either software designers or musicians isn't going to help any of us.

Yes, I do terminate any scammer's account with SOS, but this is always by default
in retrospect after they have contacted someone. They simply re-register with our site.
I did think of banning the use of Yahoo email registrations at one time, but
that's unfair on genuine Yahoo users - but they do seem to nearly always use Yahoo email
addresses, so if you are suspicious of any email approaches fro readers ads gear you are
selling, if it's a Yahoo account and poorly written English, then reason to be doubly on
the alert perhaps?

I sent a reply stating that the condition and cost were on the advert. His reply I hear
you cry!! Quote:
Hello,
Thanks for the mail respones. The price is okay by me,I do
appreciate your response regarding my offer on the ( GEQ3102 & DSP2000 C).Am out for
a missionary assistment outside the UK at the moment as an (UNICEF AGENT).I have contact my client who is my associate to issue out a cheque of (£3,500) to
you . Once you receive the cheque all you have to do is just to deduct the cost of the (GEQ3102 & DSP2000 C) after the cheque must have clear in your
bank and then kindly assist in wiring the rest of the funds to my shipping agent through Western Union Money Transfer they are the ones who will be coming down for
the pickup in your ends. The reason for this is that they have some other consignment in which they have to pickup for me near your location hope this is
clear with you. These funds would be used for arranging the shippment and
also make arrangements for all necessary shipping dcuments. So all you have to do is
just to provide me with the information which the paymentwould be sent to you
such as Full Name on cheque............ Home Address...... city........ State......... Zipcode........ Country...... Home, cell, work phone
numbers..... So as soon as all these details have been provided payment
would be issued out to you as soon as possible,I will wait for the cheque to clear
before pickup is made.I would be expecting to read from you. Best
regards.
07024079053 I will offer you £50 for you to considered
the item sold to me.

I think as a rule, just ignore any email with sufficiently dodgy grammar.... I'm surprised no-one has set up an intermediary company for online transactions... They
take receipt of the goods and release them to buyer once the money clears - else they
return the goods. Does this exist? If not, why not?

Cool - thanks. Yeah I thought it was a pretty obvious solution....
It can't be
that widely used then can it?? Or at least, it has failed to become the de facto standard
for internet transactions. Otherwise these scams would cease surely? - any idea why?

Here at SOS we did investigate the concept of us becoming an escrow service, but it would
have involved us in becoming compliant with Financial Services Authority (FSA) rules and
that was a whole load of admin hoops we simply do not have time or inclination to jump
through -- even if they would accept us!!! The escrow.com site is based in USA
and is seemingly governed by USA regualtions, see footer on their site: All
US dollar escrow services offered on this Website are provided independently and
exclusively by Internet Escrow Services(SM) (IES), one of the operating subsidiaries of
Escrow.com. IES is fully licensed and accredited as an escrow company and is subject to
compliance with all applicable escrow regulations, including the California Financial and
Business Code. There's nothing stopping you asking a Readers Ads seller if
they will accept such a service, but since it takes a cut of the action, and there's
probably someone else always willing to deal direct, it means take-up of escrow has been
less than everyone would think in this scam-soaked internet world. Ian G

I made some tentative enquiries of escrow.com a while back. I found the whole user
experience to be too dollarised and US-centric to give me a warm cosy feeling. I think
there was an issue about using their preferred courier too, which was US-based IIRC. If
they or someone like them would set up a truly EU-based service then it might seem more
attractive - to me at least. Incidentally, Ian, I was involved in the creation
of a non-profit FSA-regulated limited company a few years ago - and it was not especially
difficult to do. All the same, I guess it would be much easier to focus on what you do
best and 'outsource the rest' as they say

Hi - I just had a glance through this thread out of curiosity and just noticed something
I'm not sure anyone has pointed out: 070 numbers are NOT mobile phone
numbers! They are premium rate numbers, which can charge up to £1.50 a minute!I guess any mention of such a number should be an immediate flag as to it being a
scam.

Hi, everyone!
I've been following this thread with interest. As someone who
regularly buys music gear from both the SOS site and from Ebay, I have been the target of
countless scammers. And being a solicitor by day I have found it extremely interesting how
these fraudsters attempt to operate. The scam that seems to be rife on the SOS site simply
exploits a loophole in the banking system, whereby a cheque will be seen to clear your
account but not actually clear (it's all down to the entering of credits and debits in
your account vs the time lag in monies actually being paid into or taken from your
account). Why on earth the banking system does not get its act together to close this
loophole down, I'll never know, especially with the highened concerns with money
laundering and the use of the banking system for the purposes of sponsoring terrorism.
Anyway, this is the loophole that the fraudster is aiming to take advantage of,
and why he will pay you a larger sum than you require. The idea is, that you pay the
fraudster the balance before your bank discovers that the cheque presented to it (by you)
is made of rubber. It used to be called the Nigerian scam, and many of the fraudsters
using this particular scam do appear to originate from Africa. Yahoo accounts and Western
Union cheques seem to offer the greatest anonimity to fraudsters, so be extremely wary of
dealing with anyone who uses either of these. I personally would not buy from or sell to
anyone who insists on using Western Union.
There are a lot of nasty little
scams out there, especially on Ebay. I've made it my mission to collect them and explain
them to the public. Please do visit Ebay and have a look at my Safe Buying: Scams And
Scammers article in the Review & Guides section.
This thread is great, and we
should all strive to keep it runnng, as I know that many people will continue to stumble
across it and be thankful that they did!
Keep vigilant, people. Oh, yeah - and
try to keep making music!

Here's an easy rule of thumb : if it comes out of China / Hong
Kong on eBay, there is a 99.999999999% chance it's a fake. The fakes are often very
convincing but they are still almost certainly fake. Whether it's a handbag or a
microphone. China has ruined eBay UK IMHO. You have to wade through pages of obvious crap
to find the genuine (albeit still potentially scamming ) UK
sellers.

Hey guys,
I just found an offer on the SOS reader ads which is quite a bargain
so i was a little suspicious..The seller did not know if the item was still under warranty
& said that the only way to buy it was to pay cash & pick it up yourself..
Since i'm not in the UK i have to ask my sister to pick it up for me & i'm worried about
getting scammed..Does this sound suspicious to you? You think the item is stolen or
something? Also in the ad there was no email address just a telephone number to call..

I doubt this is a scam, cash on collection
is usually the safest way to purchase goods. Whether they deliver or you have to pick up,
you'll never really know if an item is stolen or genuine. It's rare they're stolen. Is the
telephone number mobile or landline they advertise? If it's landline, this is better as
you can do a trace / check on that number. Get the home address too. If it all matches up,
worth grabbing that bargain, but for extra safety, get someone to go with your sister.
What is the item and how are they advertising it?

^^ Well its a Virus TI desktop and its £250 cheaper than the normal prices
advertised..The number posted was a cellphone but my sister is going with another friend
to pick it up at his house so i'll know where he lives..
Only problem is
neither my friend or sister know anything about music instruments so i guess i have to
trust him & check it myself when they mail it to me here in switzerland..
I
guess it shouldn't be my concern where he got it right, as long as it works!

I'd send someone who could test it and / or knew what they're
looking for. FYI - If it IS stolen gear and you buy it, you could be be done for handling
stolen goods.
Call the seller and ask why it's cheaper than everyone else.
When I bought a Virus b Keyboard (MUCH cheaper than other adverts) via bank
transfer, it never arrived and I never saw my money again. Bank transfer is the easiest
way to get conned without trace. It's very easy to open a bank account with forged or old
address details.
Maybe you should go with your insticts.

I only ever sell my stuff on SOS as cash on collection. That way the buyer gets to see it
working and there is no chance of me getting into the age old argument of it arriving
broken when you know it was working when you posted it. It works both ways
though as I am letting strangers into MY house. I always keep things like dongles, wallets
and small items tucked away as they can easily not be there when the buyer has left. There
is just as much risk for the seller on cash on collection and my wife is never happy about
me doing it. all the best. Vinny.

Don't want to start something here, but a friend has just - apparently - been scammed on
eBay over a microphone sale from a hijacked Dolphin Music site.
Ebay are
aware, but is anyone else aware of this issue?
Yes - I know what the date is,
but thought it was something I should bring to attention, in case true.

Heads-up warning to watch out and ignore/delete emails that you receive from engrsunny_mail@yahoo.co.uk in response to
Readers Ads posts, if they read anything like this new variation. We believe this is a
SCAM. Good to hear from you and thanks for the understanding you have
rendered on this purchase. it may interest you that i am buying this from you as a gift a
foundational children's church for the main time then better once can be purchased brand
new...I'm okay with your asking price of £625 and I'm ready to give you Extra £25 to
secure the item for me so it will not be sold to another buyer and for you to know how
committed i am in buying from you. So the total money you will be getting from the
purchase will be £650 and I agreed to pay your full. I'd like you to know
that I'd be paying you with a Banker's Draft or a UK Bank certified Cheque... So you
should be expecting a payment of £650 in which i will instruct my secretary to issue out
the payment with the details you'll be forwarding to me for payment. As soon as you
received it, I want you to proceed to your bank and get it cashed, once the payment is
been confirmed by you then i can proceed with the shipment to my location. I
want a perfect arrangement from you as i am a very busy person and engaged in a lot of
things to come for the viewing. I hope this is okay by you. I'd like you to get back
to me with your contact information so the payment could be send to you. Name
in full: Address: Postcode: Phone# Cell# Home# Also
if any buyer contacts you on this particular item, please tell them it's already been sold
because I'm ready to make payment as soon as i get those details from you.
You
can reach me on this numbers 02084781433 or +447024022091, but it is better you send me
emails because i might be busy to pick my calls...... I wait to read from you as soon
as possible... Engr S. Mail

Hi guys, i'm a longtime reader of SOS and lurker and after coming across this thread i've
decided to register. I hope this post belongs here, if it doesn't, please move it. My problem is that i'm romanian and living in Romania, which has made it all but
imposible to buy any second-hand gear from the UK or use eBay. I do regularly buy records
and accessories from sites like chemical records or thomann, but that's about it. I do
have a mastercard and paypal account, and i've supplied all online shops with proof of
identity when requested. However, i've recently tried to buy a nord lead 2x from SOS
users and i soon as i mentioned that i'm from Romania (but perfectly willing to transfer
money to an uk friend to buy and pick up), they all hung up on me (one actually cursed at
me). I've had the same problem with ebay, trying to buy an akai mpc 1000, where
users that shipped worldwide told me they would not accept dealing with anyone from
Romania (that is, when i could actually find sellers willing to ship abroad). So i guess my question is - can anyone tell me how i could actually buy some second-hand
gear from the UK and not be automatically treated as a scammer? I'm willing to send photos
of my id, of myself, my card or whatever else is necessary. All i want is the assumption
that i'm a legitimate buyer and not out to con people. P.S. As far as selling
my gear abroad goes, i'm not even dreaming about that, with the stigma of being
east-european...

scamming has become almost endemic, and eastern european countries have sadly been
indicated as the source of much of it.... but no more so I think, in reality than
african (especially Nigeria) , south american and russian/chinese try www.gearonline.co.ukit's not the cheapest, but they are decent people and may be willing to let you "prove"
yourself.... once you have an established relationship you should be sorted for any future
purchases... ultimately, it affects us all.... I've come close to falling
foul of it myself.,,... and My son got stung in an ebay/paypal scam to the tune of a
couple of grand..... and I'm far from naive about this (he on the other hand was a
stupid teenager and is driving me mental ) Max

I feel for ya Cypher..... A very good friend of mine is Russian and tries to
run a legitimate, professional studio there based around Logic and a stack of hardware
synths and samplers, etc., but he has a real dilemna - he can't buy stuff in Russia and
neither can he get anyone to buy from outside Russia, not so much because the retailer
doesn't trust HIM as such but there's a good chance that anything they ship to him will go
missing in transit. Some courier companies such as UPS and FedEx won't even deliver to
certain areas there (or charge an outrageous surcharge). He even has problems getting
updates to software, etc., because as soon as 'the system' sees he's in Russia, it gets
blocked. Good luck!

@ Max - thanks for the suggestion, i knew those guys, but their gear is a little too old
for my tastes - i'm usually looking for stuff that's 4-5 years old at the most, like an
akai mpc 1000, an echo layla 24 etc. Rogue Music are also a nice source with decent prices, but
unfortunately they're in the US and the shipping would kill me.
@ hollowsun -
i feel for the guy too, it's even harder to buy or sell stuff from Russia - at least
Romania's in the EU. But i do have a romanian friend who tried to buy a vintage russian
Polivoks synth from Ukraine and got scammed. As far as buying new equipment from Romania,
that's a nightmare - for example a brand new TI Polar from the romanian distributor
retails at well above 2500 euro - there's one on the UK ebay at 1150 pounds right now. You
could tell your friend that if he has the money he should wait until he needs 3-4 pieces
of kit and fly to germany, buy them used and fly back - with the low cost airlines it
could be a pretty good deal.

Not everyone with somewhat dodgy English is a scammer. I advertised a Korg piano and got a
response by email from a guy. The text and the way it was written didn't seem right. I
followed it up anyway, the guy came to my house, saw the piano and bought it cash. He was
Spanish, and had only started working here in Scotland. Lovely bloke, a gearhead like me,
and loves making music. So I do feel for the poster from Romania!

Thanks for the support, guys. Just imagine that there's plenty of studios in Romania, as
there's plenty of work not just in music production, but also in media etc. All of those
people need gear, and many are on a budget (we've still got lower wages here than in the
west). Since English is the most well-known foreign language here, browsing UK sites for
second-hand equipment is the quickest solution for many of us, since now we'd have to pay
less because of the EU customs union. And i suspect it's the same in most of Eastern
Europe (especially the EU part of it).
On the other hand, be wary of
scammers, since that was also endemic here a few years ago. But do give people like us a
chance to prove ourselves as valid purchasers, because there's more of us than scammers.
Now that i've wrapped that up, cheers!
P.S. Now that i've got that off my chest, anyone know where i can get a second-hand Akai
MPC 1000 or an Echo Layla 3G (or Audiofire 8)?

Hello all - I'm selling a few things on the site at the moment and wondered what the
situation is regarding Paypal payments. I've heard of the payments being reversed after
goods have been sent, leaving sellers high and dry - could someone enlighten me about how
this works, and what I should do to cover myself?

Hi Ron,
I have heard of this but
don't know of one case where it's actually happened. I have been using PayPal for many,
many years and not yet (touch wood) had any problems.
One suggestion for added
security would be to tell the buyer to allow you 5-7 days for the money to reach your bank
account from PayPal. As far as I know, nothing can be reversed if there are no funds in
your PayPal account.

only I had the time to toy with this scammer.

dunno
I think its very plausible for the seller to be new. many people
only sign up when they want to sell something like that and the cheap price just
reflects the bidders not the seller
So he\she seems genuine to me BUT
there is one thing for sure.. regardless of whether the seller has 0 or 1000 feedback
points i would only pay that kind of money in person when collecting the item

This happened to me. A client of mine
wanted to pay for some goods via paypal and did so. £1,000 worth. 3 months later,
Paypal send me an email to say they have reversed the transaction, taking £1,000 straight
out of my bank account (I have a full Paypal account). The buyer had reported the
transaction as a fraud.
Luckily I tracked the bloke down, and he had
forgotten he had used paypal, and didnt recognise the entry on his credit card statement
so queried it.
Paypal took 3% fee on both the first transaction and the
reversal leaving me £60 out of pocket. No apologies no opportunity to defend the
accusation.
Now I dont do anything on Paypal over £300. Its more hassle
than its worth.

160180006225 hes selling the elektron drum machine and synth but has no genuine pics. He wont do cash on delivery through a reputable company! Be cautious. I think
i will just pay the extra for a new one as paypal just cant be trusted to give money back
if he dont deliver.

I've just spotted this! If this can
happen any time it's outrageous... you could never be sure you weren't simply going to
have money removed from your account.
On another note, I have heard lots of
horror stories about buyers getting scammed by sellers insisting on Western Union
payments, but what about if a buyer insists on paying by WU? (Just for the correct amount,
no inflated amounts etc.) Is this a possible area for scamming? Someone in Europe has just
offered to pay for one of my Ebay sales by WU, saying that their bank will not let him
open a Paypal account. I have refused to accept the payment, as it seems suspicious, but
can't work out the mechanics of any scam that would operate in this way.
Any
ideas?

Ronnie, it does sound dodgy to me.
I would insist on this person paying the
funds directly into your bank account by BACs payment, and then you wait for the monies to
clear into your account.
I recently sent the sum of £75,000 to an account in
the US, and it cleared after about 5 days. I sent the monies in pounds sterling, which
means that the recipient's bank would have charged him to convert to dollars. The reverse
would happen for you, if the buyer sent the monies in his native currency, which then had
to be converted to pounds sterling.

This is apparently a new scam involving Visa cards. I have pasted it below: This one is pretty slick since they provide Y O U with all the information, except the one piece they want. Note, the callers do not ask for your card number;
they already have it. This information is worth reading. By understanding how the
VISA & MasterCard Telephone Credit Card Scam works, you'll be better prepared to protect yourself. One of our employees was called on Wednesday from
"VISA", and I was called on Thursday from "MasterCard". The scam
works like this: Person calling says, "This is (name), and I'm calling from the
Security and Fraud Department at VISA. My badge number is 12460. Your card has been
flagged for an unusual purchase pattern, and I'm calling to verify. This would be on
your VISA card which was issued by (name of bank) did you purchase an
Anti-Telemarketing Device for £497.99 from a Marketing company based in London?"
When you say "No", the caller continues with, "Then we will be issuing a credit to
your account. This is a company we have been watching and the charges range from
£297 to £497, just under the £500 purchase pattern that flags most cards. Before
your next statement, the credit will be sent to (gives you your address), is that correct?" You say "yes". The caller continues - "I will be
starting a fraud investigation. If you have any questions, you should call the 0800
number listed on the back of your card (0800-VISA) and ask for Security. You will need to refer to this Control Number. The caller then gives you a 6
digit number. "Do you need me to read it again?" Here's the IMPORTANT
part on how the scam works the caller then says, "I need to verify you are in
possession of your card." He'll ask you to "turn your card over and look for some
numbers." There are 7 numbers; the first 4 are part of your card number, the next 3
are the security numbers that verify you are the possessor of the card. These are
the numbers you sometimes use to make Internet purchases to prove you have the card.
The caller will ask you to read the 3 numbers to him. After you tell the caller
the 3 numbers, he'll say, "That is correct, I just needed to verify that the card has
not been lost or stolen, and that you still have your card. Do you have any other
questions?" After you say, "No," the caller then thanks you and states, "Don't
hesitate to call back if you do", and hangs up. You actually say
very little, and they never ask for or tell you the Card number. But after we were
called on Wednesday, we called back within 20 minutes to ask a question. Are we glad
we did! The REAL VISA Security Department told us it was a scam and in the last 15
minutes a new purchase of £497.99 was charged to our card. Long
story - short - we made a real fraud report and closed the VISA account. VISA is
reissuing us a new number. What the scammers want is the 3-digit PIN number on the
back of the card. Don't give it to them. Instead, tell them you'll call VISA or
MasterCard directly for verification of their conversation. The real VISA told us
that they will never ask for anything on the card as they already know the
information since they issued the card! If you give the scammers your 3 Digit PIN Number, you think you're receiving a credit. However, by the time you get your
statement you'll see charges for purchases you didn't make, and by then it's almost
too late and/or more difficult to actually file a fraud report. What
makes this more remarkable is that on Thursday, I got a call from a "Jason Richardson
of MasterCard" with a word-for-word repeat of the VISA scam. This time I didn't let
him finish. I hung up! We filed a police report, as instructed by VISA. The police
said they are taking several of these reports daily! They also urged us to tell
everybody we know that this scam is happening . Please pass this on
to all your family and friends. By informing each other, we protect each other. Regards Dave Newton Card Specialist Johnson

Slick as it is, the alarm bells should start ringing when you receive the unsolicited call
purporting to your bank, phone company, utility company, insurer,...
As soon as
someone calls you and tries to get you to verify your identity, ask "have they proven
themselves to me yet?" I have had this argument with three different companies who, acting
in our mutual interest, have challenged me for credentials after they called me. I think
that paves the way for these confidence tricks!

I'm with Jimi on this one.
Never give confidential information out over the
phone unless you have made the call. I regularly conduct banking matters over the phone,
where I have called my bank to confirm that transactions have occurred. Naturally, they
ask confidential questions so that they can verify my identity.
But on a few
occasions I have been called by persons claiming to work for "this or that" company, and
they have asked me to disclose confidential information, and I have told them to take a
hike.

As requested, i shall put what happened to me here: Probably the worst week in
my life. I thought it was gonna be the best but it turns out opposite. Anyway, been searchin for Virus synth for a long time now and i found a great deal at Trance.nu,
where some guy offers Virus C for 400 euro. So, i contact the guy, he gave me his msn so
we could deal this. I asked him about the virus, he said its old for three
years, mint condition, been like 30 percent of time in use, 70 percent in rack. Everything
nice and really, he did seem like a nice guy. He even said to pop in few jacks and
Vengeance soundsets. Next, he told me if i could pay in advance over Western
Union and right away, so he wil pay shipment, and he will send it to me as a gift so i
dont have to pay any taxes or other [ ****** ] (because then it would come up 650 euro for
croatia) and i said great. I went to a local bank with my mother, did all the stuff, sent
him the money, came home i gave him the number which he uses to take the money. He says
ok, that he will go and send virus now and that it will ship on monday. I said great. After that he was not on MSN for two days, it was a bit stinky for me so i googled
his email adress. I found him on several other forums with different locations in his
profile, russia, norway, france, etc etc...my stomach started to work a bit but i thought
i was just imagining things. So finally next day he came on msn, in the morning, i sent
him message right away and u guess, he doesnt reply to me for whole day. So
then, i googled his name....and i found things which i never hoped to find. Few blogs and
sites saying that this prick is a cheat and that he cheated many people, from all over the
world. I just coudnt believe my fukin eyes. here are few posts: http://www.zooloomusic.com/''got ripped off for a bunch of hard earned money and am feeling pretty dumb about
it... warning to anyone reading this ... There is a right royal Estonian **** called Juri
Kerbo who I wish the fleas of a thousand camels to infest his armpits and groin area...
bless him! If you're googling that name and you're reading this post... do not deal with
this wanker, he is a scammer and a low life... and I firmly believe what goes around comes
around... so one day he'll get his and when he does, he'll think of all the people he
ripped off, bastard!.... well that felt good to get off my chest. As you can
imagine this has really shaken my faith in hanity and my desire to do anything musical...

4&lastdays= 2000& [ ****** ] hell. Bought a Virus C (or so I thought) on the
Harmony Central classifieds, from a guy in Estonia, though not even sure if that's true.
Anyway, he has the ad up, along with one for a Jupe 8. I drop an email initally about the
Virus C, which he says is still available. I email back saying I'm interested, and is the
Jupe also still available. He tells me the Jupe has sold - I take this as a good sign, as
if he's a scammer, surely he'd try and sting me for both synths. He sends a pic of the
Virus, which seems legit - a quick shufty on Google images doesn't come up with the same
image, so it's unlikely he's just whipped it off the net. I also query the voltage, and he
says it's on 220v - 240v. So, I transfer over $500 USD, plus charges, which
comes to £300 GBP in the end - a good price for a Virus, which I was planning on selling
on in the UK to get a bit of money to live on over this semester. This was last
weekend, so the money has probably just cleared into the guys account. I dropped an email
last night - normally he's pretty quick responding but as yet no answer. I read
the HC complaints section to see if I could spot this guy before buying, and did a search
on his name on there (vco.osc) and nothing came up. Having just had a browse though now, I
find this... "I sent $700can to a guy who says his name is yuri kerbo from
norway. Which im guessing is a fake id hes using to collect wired cash.....hes got 2
postings on your classifieds one for an mc 909 which he claims to have sent me....and now
is not returning my emails a virus c is also in that ad. There is a new one he posted the
other day for some new synth.... his email he is using is kentorange@hotmail.com search for it in the synth
section. He even went through the trouble of sending me a bunk tracking number phone
number and adress....I am from canada so, I set up a bunk hotmail from sacremento
california under a different name and asked to buy both of the synths he had advertized in
the same ad (one of which he already supposedly sold me) and he gave me a price for both
of them!!! I wish I could get him to go to the moneygram (that is the payment
system he uses) vthinking that he was gonna get that money and have the cops snag him....
but thats entrapment DAMMIT!...Oh well for some reason hes not answering the emails i sent
him asking where my 909 is but he is still postingon your site and trying to sell my alter
email ego the 909 he already sold ME!!! I wish there was a way to get this bastard! Oh
well ....theres your HEADS UP!" Suprisingly (or not) the name I transfered the
money to was Kerbo Juri... I wish there was a way to contact the people who
post complaints on HC so I could get in touch with the other guy who got ripped off, find
out what the situation is. [ ****** ] pissed off now... was kinda relying on
that money for uni. Worked my ass off for it too. One day, we will meet... I feel same as these guys, stupid, pathetic, ripped off, i
have no faith, nor will for anything, dont wanna produce, i dotn wanna do anything
anymore...i am dissapointed! I have all his details but i dont know what to do: Account holder: Juri Kerbo My account number is: 3356 6717 0006 My
IBAN account number: EE 9333 0033 5667 1700 06 Bank name is: Sampo Bank My phone is: + 372 58 066 349 Adress of my bank: Narva mnt.
street 11 (street) 15015 (zip) Tallinn (city) SWIFT: FORE
EE 2X (swift code) My adress: 12 Laki street, apt. 45 400 Euro is
big money for me, i have worked a lot for it and i am just a student. I think i will
contact the rest of these guys, we might team up and do something. I am pissed of... What do u think? Any suggestions? Should i just forget it and move on or stop
this, because many other people might get ripped of, and many worked hard for their
money...I still cant believe this! Thx for reading And also, i saw
another member here (the one from my 2nd quote) got tricked at about same time as me.
Fizzo guy, he was tricked 2007/2008 at Christmas time, also Virus C, this is his post from
this forum: This is another post from Fizmo guy who got cheated, and woudnt u
believe, he was tricked somewhere at the same time as me but last year, around
Christmas! ''Well seeing as the mob is baying for a
righteous lynching, I had a charming Estonian gentleman by the name of Juri Kerbo relieve
me of $500 just before Christmas. He was supposed to send me a Virus C, but I'm assuming
he forgot that part. He really is a forgetful chap, as there's a lot of other people who
he's forgotten to post this Virus to. His phone number ( ) is 56 300 239
(Estonian), and he seems to have several emails... oscknob@yahoo.comvbajandin@dynanet-eu.eedraxx@mail.rukentorange@hotmail.comvco.filter@gmail.comHe seems to know
about synths, and he even sent me a photo of the Virus which looked genuine. Now if only he'll come on here saying he forgot to post it, and offering a refund... I've been onto the local police about it, my bank, and his bank, but I'm sat here
with the guy's bank details and phone number, but no one wants to do anything. It's
maddening.''

You can trace all the emails using the headers of the email. See this page. http://compnetworking.about.com/od/workingwithipaddresses/qt/ipaddressemai
l.htmYou can find out where this person really is from that, but thats
all. You wont get your money back. Do some research, you might even get an exact location
such as a university or an airport. http://www.private.org.il/IP2geo.htmlJoe

Never purchase a db technologies fifty line PA system from Rosana Ahmed or Kylie
Martin, I got the PA from a second chance offer from ebay, it had real pictures of
one, not just taken from a website, they asked for the money to be transfered
in to their bank account, the emails i recieved were very snappy and a bit
forceful so i was on my guard, and when i asked for their details they almost became
defensive the seller gave false details of their "business", which was a bit
stupid as i checked it and they had never heard of them, they could never speak on the
phone, I hoped i could pick up the item, based in london as i was working their
next week, but how unfortunate that the seller is in plymouth with the pa so i couldnt
collect it...unless i live near plymouth by which time i think the scammer realised i knew
this wasnt real and politely said this isnt working luckily the scammer was
quite dumb and didnt fool me, but watch it, im reporting them to ebay etc... here is the ebay listing http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=270200299869&ssP
ageName=STRK:MEDW:IT&ih=017their email address is rosanaahmed@hotmail.combit of a
shame as they are very nice systems:( atleast i lost no money!

Thanks for the heads-up Paul. Good ol ebay ehh - the item has been listed again!
Strange also, that the seller has a 280 rating albeit at 99.6% (unless they've hijacked
a profile).

Ebay are well known for a degree of apathy when it comes to rooting out fraudsters. I was
once 'duped' with pirate software despite the listing suggesting it was legit. Ebay
wouldn't take any action despite the clear breach of listing rules. It was not until I
involved both trading standards and the software importers that the listing (and other
similar listings by the same trader) were removed.

I've had one of these from USA. It was sent by someone caled Ellen Gideon and tells the
tragic story of Mahmoud who apparently suffers the same symptons even though it is
medicines rarest disease. I thought it was strange when he assured me he had only three
months to live and then contacted me 8 months later. Watch out for Scumbags!

Beware this person: Christopher lamptey lampte011206@hotmail.comJust had
the above try and scam me through Gumtree buying a computer,it was reasonably convincing
and could probaby be applied to anyone using paypal as a payment method: 1)
they email you saying they are interested (good english) and request your paypal email and
your name. 2) Then you receive notification of an instant payment that is
addressed from paypalservice, BUT if you look at where it originates from the sending
address is online-trackreference@accountant.com.<
/a>
3) the catch is that the payment is pending (checking paypal will confirm
this is not the case) and that funds are being held until you send notification to online-trackreference@accountant.com that the item has been sent with a parcel tracking number; the funds will then be
released to your paypal account in order to protect the buyer.. hmmmm I have
copied the email below with item details left out, including the delivery address as they
may know nothing about it: Dear ...., You have an
Instant Payment of £... GBP from Christopher Lamptey (lampte011206@hotmail.com)
Payment Details Purchased From: Transaction
ID:5NS50308X5606661C Item NumberItem TitleQuantityPriceSubtotal 24018944 1 £750.00 £750.00 Postage
& Packing via Royalmail Next Day Guaranteed Delivery Service: (includes any
seller packing fees) £20.00 Postage Compensation : £0.00 Total: £770.00 Payment Information: The payment for Guntree Item no.24018944 has been verified and confirmed. But due to
security reasons on both sides of the buyer and the seller the status of the payment is
pending. Most sellers do not ship out the exact items as they have listed on Gumtree and
we are keen on securing the Gumtree community. You will be required to post out the item
and email us its shipment reference number. We will then verify the status and contents of
the shipment within 5 minutes with the courier service its been shipped through. Once we
have completed verification, your account will be credited instantly. As soon as
shipment is made, Kindly get back to us with the shipment tracking number so that we can
confirm it and then credit your funds immediately. You can send the shipment tracking
number to us at (online-trackreference@accountant.com) Note: Do not send the shipment
reference number to the buyer until we have confirmed the status of the shipment and
credited your Paypal Account. Delivery

Just a quick heads-up - not music kit but:-
I tried to buy a black BMW 320
auto, "Y" reg ( a gift for the misses no less).
The item has been re-listed and
I am the "inconsiderate buyer wasting everyones time"
Caveat Emptor
This scammer will not give you his address to collect the car. He will not answer
requests for an address. He will not answer his phone. A 2nd phone number (
supplyed by EBAY) is someone else - totally unrelated i.e - clearly not an english bloke
called Harry, living in Swanley, Kent
The item is 280288201329
I
left a negative and reported his behavior to Ebay. He has not even asked why I left a
negative !!!!!!!!!
I know its not synths etc, but I feel better warning
everyone and anyone about this dirtbag.

Slick con...
Between winning the bid on an ISA 220 and receiving the seller's
sales information, a third party snuck in with their own invoice. It was perfectly worded,
item description, sale details etc. and was sent via ebay, on official ebay corporate
looking HTML with working ebay links.
I paid it. The genuine seller contacted
me the next day with the genuine invoice. Alarm bells rang and within a few mails I
realized I'd just been ripped off 830 euros.
The transfer was done using
Western Union, which ebay warns against, so I should have been more cautious - but the
invoice was so well prepared, it even supplied escrow details (payment to a third party
who holds the cash until both parties agree the transaction has been satisfactorily
made).
I was utterly duped by the professionalism of the documentation, so I
would like to pass the warning on to all - NEVER use Western Union for these transactions
and make sure you use the internal ebay messaging system.
Eagle out.

OH MY GOD!!! This guy sounds insane! 'Be alone, I hate crowds'!!! Don't be alone, have at least 10 Police Officers Hiding for when he steals you're money
and all your other belongings! Seriously, this is the craziest I've heard yet.
Sounds like he's either out to steal or I hate to say it but... worse if your wife was
dealing with him. Unbelievable!

What happens if he were to google my name, and somehow find my real address?
This experience has made me think twice about posting/replying to adverts. Whats scares
me....is that had he listed the 808 for £1100, dispensed with the alarming email....I
would have wound up with a potentially lethal individual in my house.
Thats

I remember someone else posting a pretty much exact copy of this message a short while
back, it looks like a copy and paster job. Bizzare type of scam message as it
could surely never work!

Very easy to set the guy up for a sting but VERY dangerous. Still, I'd be tempted to let
him meet a few of my friends! lol

Don't know whether I'm being scammed here, but I bought a Korg Nano Pad and Nano Control
from an ad in Readers' Ads on 1st July. Seller replied after bank transfer on the day to
say it'd be posted 'sometime this afternoon'. Since then I've heard nothing - emailed
twice with no reply. At what point should I deduct it's a scam? Maybe Royal Mail are being
very slow and the seller's away on holiday?? I know it's only been 8 days, but I'm
starting to get nervous... the amount's not large, but if this has happened to others? The
ads are still up on the site.

BEWARE "PETER CRAVEN" AKA GARY FEENEY!
This guy recently ripped me off for £450 in
a Neumann TLM103 scam on SOS readers ads.
He is extremely plausable, knows his stuff
and seems completely at ease when you speak to him.
A very smooth con-man.
He
uses a legitimate bank account under the name "Gary Feeney."
Police are
investigating. The bank fraud team have also been notified.
Go with care

Beware this prophecy from Mr Nostrodamus! From: nostrodamusfamily@yahoo.comGood
Day, I saw your advertisement on the Internet; I'm really interested in buying
it for my daughter for her school Project. I really love this particular model, can you
please explain some more than what I have already seen on the advertisement. {How well it
works}. The working condition is really important for me because I am not in a
good state of health to come to see it. I'd really appreciate a well descriptive
description about its present condition and the {asking price} that it will be sold for. I
would also appreciate if you could send more pictures of it. Please reply back
with your asking price for record purpose. Get back to me as soon as
possible to avoid further delay in the purchase, you don't need to worry about the
delivery to my location because my shipping agent will be ready for coming to receive it
once payment has been confirmed by you. You can contact us on this line
+44 70359 16387, but it is better if you could send me e-mails because I might be busy to
pick my calls...... Please send your reply to : nostrodamusfamily@yahoo.comHope to hear from you as soon as possible Best regards Mr.

Yes, I've had the Nostradamus prophecy enquiring about two of my three 'sale' ads in the
forums. Fortunately, such obvious spam seems to be spoken in Pidgin English. One of these
days we'll all get really well written emails and then we'll be in trouble...
As far as Sengaruny@aol.com is concerned, I've
bought from him before and all went well.
I use Paypal with fees - always -
just in case of non-delivery, but the synth I bought was exactly as described, delivered
on time, and in the original box. I spoke a number of times with him on the 'phone. I
can't vouch with certainty about anyone I've never met, but I can say that I had no
problems and he seemed a decent chap in our brief dealings.
Incidentally,
I'll never buy a higher priced item without the original box. I'd not dream of buying,
say, a Virus or Andromeda only to find the original owner had 'binned' the original
packaging. Most of us still have the boxes for our tellies, let alone a £1500 synth,
hanging around the loft. And thieves never go into the loft to grab the original
packaging...
If it's a cheap MIDI controller [like I'm selling unboxed at the
moment ] or a 40-year old vintage, then I'd understand that perhaps the original
carboard was lost or disposed of. Anything else, and I'll walk on by.
EDIT;
4 years I've been an SOS forum visitor, and this is my first SOS post! Is that some kind
of a record?!

I had the email from Nostradamus, I thought you might like to see my
response! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Good day to you too Sir, Thanks for getting in touch. This model of the Liquid Mix is in immaculate
condition, as are the emulation algorithms - My favourite of which is the US Vintage Tube
1 (Fairchild Model 670 (US), which has no rust or marks even though it is so old. I'd
recommend getting some decent leads for this old equipment, and a decent supply of clean,
renewable energy (cold fusion would be ideal). There are 40 Compressors and 20 classic
EQs, each one of these will require its own metaphysical storage space, and an EU to
UK(mk2) 42 watt phase coherency adapter (each sold separately, easy to find in ASDA or at
a flea market) . They all work flawlessly, a perfect compliment to a child's music
course. One feature that I found really quite remarkable was that if you give
the FireWire cable a little squeeze on one side, it creates a 'Flanger' effect, just as
though you were slowing down a tape with your finger! Very authentic and great fun. This is a considerably large setup, and will probably require a small shed or some
sort of bunker to contain all of these emulations. You will also be required to get a
license to use the Distressor emulation, as it has nuclear capabilities. As for
the price, in my advert, I was asking for £210, but with the current state of inflation
since I posted the ad, I have decided to lower the price to £34,000 per emulation, a
total of £2,040,000. A ship will certainly be required to move all of these
algorithms, I can arrange to have then delivered to Southampton docks in a container for
collection and shipment to anywhere in the known galaxy, and some elements of the 5th
dimension (or time-space) / or Nigeria. Best wishes in your future prophecies,
I await you reply with semi-baited breath. Kindest regards, A. I just sent it, i'll let you know if he responds!

I think "Steph Brown" may also be Gary Feeney, and may also have scammed me. I
replied to this advert: Effects | Signal Processors : Focusrite Liquid Mix 32
channel EQ and Compression. 20 EQs and 40 Compressors are available straight
out of the box, with an expanding library online. New, boxed and unused. Originally
bought in September. £220. Email Steph Brown (Glasgow) 10/12/09 ...and was given the following details: steph.medical@googlemail.com8
Carmichael Place Glasgow G42 9UE 07513 077074 Also the
following work details: I'm on tomorrow backshift so you can call anytime after
2pm. At the moment I'm based on the High Dependency Unit (Victoria Infirmary), the
direct line is 0141 201 5062 or you can go through the switchboard on 0141 201 6000. My details Halifax/Bank Of Scotland Acc No 01222899 Sort Code 804635 Acc Name Stephen Andrew Brown Didn't think anyone who
gave that much info, and also an actual bank account would be fraudulent, but was aware I
wasn't checking fully. I googled the address, and yes, it was near that hospital -
perfectly plausible he could work there. I transfered the money and didn't hear
anything for a couple of days. Then emailed asking for a tracking number and was told it
would be sent over "when I get back from work." That was three days ago. Now all emails to that address bounce. I googled the phone number and found
this: http://edinburgh.gumtree.com/edinburgh/79/47959979.htmlGARY?? Also I looked up the other adverts posted by "Steph" Microphones : Neumann U87ai I have a mint condition and unused U87ai, in nickel, with an
EA87 suspension mount. Mic comes in its original wooden case and original box, and the
EA87 is also boxed. Bought in June, with original receipt. Collection and cash only
please. £950. Email Steph Brown (Glasgow) 14/12/09 There's that Neumann
again. Also... Voice Channels | Preamps : Focusrite ISA 428 multichannel front
end with four classic, Rupert Neve-designed, transformer-based pre amps with switchable
impedance and direct instrument inputs. Boxed and unused, with original receipt from
Dolphin Music, purchased back in August. Local collection only please. £850. Email
Steph Brown (Glasgow) 12/12/09 I think these "collection only" items might just
be flak. Anyone dealt with this person? I think there is about a 1% chance I could be
wrong about this but I'm fairly certain this is Feeney or a Feeney-a-like. I
have contacted my local police as well as emailing the address suggested for Ian Gilby.
Anything else I can do - someone mentioned contacting the bank... I'd like to
hear if any of you have any more info.

potential wanted ad scam.. anyone heard or had experience of Andy Evan(s)? a_evans@sify.com and andy.evan46@gmail.com from Spain? he's
replied to my wanted ad for a dolby 363 sr/a unit with very small images culled from ebay
and what looks like google image searches as they are images of different units! we has reduced the price by 50 euros in the last couple of days for no obvious reason
and accepts paypal, western union, bank wire transfer.. it seems decidedly
dodgy to me and I've as asked for pictures he's taken himself but I'm not going to send
any money!

Got stung from Spain with Western Union, I wouldn't unless you know the person or unless
your feeling generouse... I ignored the "If it sounds too good to be true, it

To answer my own question, if you get scammed on a paypal transaction, you may get your
money back if a claim is decided in your favour but only to the extent that Paypal can
recover the money from the seller's paypal account, so basically any scammer worth his
salt would presumably empty his paypal account pretty quicksmart and leave you up a
certain creek without so much as a canoe.

BE VERY AWARE: I sent money for a Mesa Boogie F30 to a guy calling himself SIMON WALTERS
(simon_walters18@yahoo.co.uk) claiming to be from Plymouth, phone number 07949355519 but
he has never posted the amp. Obviously a scammer now but seemed very genuine at first.
Again, "too good to be true, it probably is!". I think he is the same guy
advertising on Gumtree.com other Mesa Boogie amps (every now and then) for £350, like
this one: http://www.gumtree.com/london/26/57971126.html

This may or may not be genuine, but I received the first message in reply to two items
wanted ads I've just placed in SOS (for an S1000 and TR808). The guy sent 2 photos of an
808 and described it as a 606. This, the price, and his keen-ness to know my address rings
alarm bells: if it is genuine, my apologies, and I've probably just passed on the cheapest
808 for some time...

I've just had an interesting response from a seller on eBay, selling an Emu Vintage Keys
Plus. When I asked them if they had any pics, they replied "don't have pics...sorry".
They're selling a SH!T load of music stuff, worth 10,000's. I was a bit caught off guard,
I have to admit... so won't be making a bid on that item.

I've
just had an interesting response from a seller on eBay, selling an Emu Vintage Keys Plus.
When I asked them if they had any pics, they replied "don't have pics...sorry". They're
selling a SH!T load of music stuff, worth 10,000's. I was a bit caught off guard, I have
to admit... so won't be making a bid on that item.
Follow up: I replied saying:
"OK, thanks for your
reply. If you can be bothered to take some and upload them I might consider bidding.
Thanks, P."
Their reply was... wait for it...
"I am not bothered"
My hunch would be they're dodgy so will share their eBay name in case anyone else

It seems this seller is far too good for us
mere peasants, check their latest reply out:
"for a stingy 150 quid you want
pictures...don't you want a HD movie with this rack? It is in very good condition and by
the way...after playing it again...I think for this sort of change is not worth selling is
it? So, it is not for sale anymore."
two words, arrogant c**t

If you check out his auctions, in some of them he states he's leaving the UK for good in 5
days.... Not exactly confidence inspiring?

Germany, Sweden... Mr Chamberlain gets around a bit.
Was going to post an ad
warning people to beware of him, but if he's so dim as to continue using the same name,
maybe we'd be better off not letting him know he's been rumbled? What do the SOS people
think?

Thank you for this post. He just replied to my wanted add for a GR33. After reading
through the thread, I have not tipped him off and just replied that I had already
purchased it. The text in the post is exactly the same as posted by Monotron.

Thanks for this post about Peter Chamberlain. He has responded to my request for an SM81
mike with the same generic wording as your responses. There again if he is genuinely
selling a lot, he may have a template - he included specs and photos on request
My only concern was his gmail address ( I tend to be itchy about gmailers) but when I
requested photos he has sent them straight away and they're obviously taken with a mobile.
The price is right and he checked post and shipping costs against my address.
I was about to pay via Paypal as the safest means but they didn't recognise his email
address - not sure what to do now if he sorts out things with Paypal.

My advice is walk away. He is a scam. I have put a couple of Wanted Ads on the SOS site.
On two occasions I received a reply from this guy. Neither of the things I was looking
for were run-of-the-mill stuff. But low and behold, Mr Chamberlain had both of them!!
It is a scam. Do not give your hard earned away. I have been scammed out of
£300 once. Never again. And believe me, when you have been scammed you feel sick and
bloody angry!!

Don't do it.
He offered me a TR-808 for £600 (about 2/3 - 1/2 the going rate),
with photos, but he referred to it as a TR-606. He also replied to my ad for an S1000.
If there's just one scintilla of doubt about an online transaction, it's better to
leave it be: there's plenty of genuine sellers around and nothing's that rare that you
should feel you must proceed (I've been trying to buy an 808 for 6 months now) - be
patient. My 2p worth is that he'll get back to you saying there's a temporary problem with
his Paypal account and can you pay by bank transfer or Western Union. My understanding is
that Paypal's not that safe: you pay, the seller swiftly whips the money out of their
account - Paypal can only refund you if the money's still in the seller's account (if
someone can clarify this, I'd be grateful)...

If someone wanted to take the trouble to
empty his account and run every time a transaction was disputed, he could get away with
ONE scam. Or there's the Chinese method of flooding eBay for a few weeks with
suspiciously cheap memory sticks etc., taking as many orders as they can, sending out fake
items and then disappearing. eBay's system might be able to get your money back, but
really you have to admit you gambled, and you lost.

Fortunately you can get your money back from Paypal after a fraudulent transaction, as a
while ago somebody got hold of my credit card details and used it through Paypal, but I
got the money back.

What's so dodgy about having a g-mail account? I would of thought the email of choice
for scammers would be something like hotmail
Any way I always wanted to see
a kind of star rating system similar to ebay on SOS reader ads, I have been buying and
selling on SOS since 2003 and it would be nice if any one who never brought anything of
me before would know I have sold and brought a few things and have many happy people who
haven't screwed over or received dodgy goods...when ever I buy things I always have in the
back of my head...what if? Although most of the time the genuine people you can spot a
mile off well most any way

That said.......
I started a thread here relating to small Firewire soundcards.
I received a PM from someone on this forum saying they has a Motu Ultralite I could have
for free!! He was getting rid of loads of gear because he was moving abroad. He didn't
want any money for it just asked me to give a bit of money to charity to 'keep the karma
flowing'. I didn't even have to pay for postage.
** ALARM BELLS **
Too good to be true = usually is
I gave the guy my work address as I was
weary of giving my home address away under the cicumstances.
Low and behold, a
few days later I received a fully working Motu Ultralite.
You see, there are
some very genuine people about. Unfortunately, there are more scumbags so spotting a good
one is getting harder.

Possible scammer advertising on SOS:
I replied to an ad for a Pioneer EFX 1000
for sale via SOS: got a reasonable reply:
Hiya..Cheers for mailing about my
EFX1000 unit. Still have it for sale if you are interested. I have attached a few
pics to this mail. Paypal is also fine Thanks Alan
The pics weren't
great and alarm bells started ringing when I replied to an ad a day or two later for a
very cheap pair of NS10s and found it was from the same seller (just registered on SOS)...
He didn't reply this time and now has two further ads for a PCM80 and a TLM103 (both
cheap).
Looks suspicious: have informed Ian Gilby.
If I'm wrong, no
doubt he'll get back to me and I'll remove this post: in the meantime, beware!

Have a wanted ad up for an 01v96 at the moment. Just got approached by a Polish
fella trying to sell me one. Shame he used photos I recognised from a recent ebay auction.
Beware the Polish contacting you at the moment! You'll probably get something
generic like I did: "From: marcinmazur@polandmail.comHello
Friend, Hope you are doing fine..My name is Mazur from Poland..How you still
interested in your posted advert..Let me know thanks" The eBay auction that finished recently that he got the photos
from... Watch out!

Hello everybody! Sorry for my not too good english. I'm unfortunately victim of
scammer. I wanted to buy blu-ray OPPO 83SE and gave adv. in polish hi-fi forum. He sent me
response that he had one but his name was Peter Chamberlain.
"My name is Peter
Chamberlain from London...I am contacting you regarding your advert you place on website
that you are looking for the above subject...I have it in very good condition and if still
interested,Let me know and i will forward you details of the item and i will also need
your shipping address and telephone number to calculate the shipping cost to your
destination. My mode of payment is Via Paypal,Western union,MoneyGram..Bank wire
transfer..Let me know which method you prefer and i ship the next day after payment has
been receive..My phone number is +447024029617..Feel free to call me anytime for further
discussion or email me back thanks and hope to hear from you soon"
I was
stupid and I believed him. I payed money by PayPal. It was about 18 July. There was no
such an informations in net about him, probably it was beginning. Of course I didn't get
item and money back. He all the time was promissing that he was honest. Now I'm angry
more beacause he uses my personal name. My name is Marcin Mazur. I live in Poland. Mr.
Chamberlain ( surely it is also not his name) USES MY NAME to find next naive people. He
even created new e-mail address using my name. He only left his own phone number
+447024029617. I know that I was stupid and naive and I lost my money but it is terrible
when You see your own name using by scammer. I don't know what to do now...

I take it that you have looked into Paypal recovery procedures? Paypal is not like Western

Unfortunately it is rather too late. It is 45 days in PayPal for these procedures. I
didn't find any info in net about Mr. Chamberlain when I was paying my money. He gave his
word of honour that he was honest. Then he promissed to give my money back. I found
different posts of him about one week ago. When I wrote to him about this he stopped
contact with me.

These past few months the only responses I've had to my SOS Ads are via scammers...
they're so blatantly obvious too, I just don't get how they think they can trick us into
dealing with them!!! Has anyone else seen this trend or is it just me!?!?! Cheers, P

wow.
I never read this post before. I just had a problem with the very
same guy. I bought a 15m snake from him. didn't turn up. 3 emails. no reply. I managed to
track him down on Facebook. contacted him there. He said DHL had posted it to the wrong
address, and he would send another one he happened to have.
I got it 3 weeks later. Was very close to contacting Ebay to get my money back.

Some forums have a sub title you can select from a drop down box when you post with a more
specific topic. If you had one of those on the forums i.e. mics guitar mastering etc. etc. All posts could reside in 1 forum then
the webmaster could add a "show only title : mastering" button for example, is it
possible? cheers SafeandSound

... probably a "shutting the stable-door" job here, but anyway...
EBay Trader
SHAHHEN ABDULLAH worked a clever scam with hookey audio software, but managed to
issue registration codes that were valid for about six months... Box, CD, printing etc all
looked absolutely OK. Also got 100% positive feedback!!
Then when the
software stops working EBay and PayPal don't want to know as it's outside their 45-day
cut-off. That also means, that they won't be after him for the money. Of course, he's "No
longer a Registered Trader" and absolutely no trace through Google.
Apparently well-known to Acoustica, who have had numerous contacts (included mine) of
the "Why is my software asking for registration codes?" variety.
Ah well...
my first 'fingers burnt'/lost money in about 350 EBay transactions. The very few other
'iffy' ones have all been sorted through EBay/PayPal

I would answer:
Dear
Agustin,
What a coincidence! I will be in Las Arenas-Vizcaya this spring so we
can meet in person and finalise the deal. Looking forward to meeting you.
Kindest regards

Hi Guys Seems there's another scammer trolling the SOS Ads received this last night, the
same email sent word for word for both my ads
Quote:
From: mr.mrsmcmail@gmail.com
Good Day,
I saw your advertisement on the Internet; I'm really interested in buying it as
am buying to set up a small scale business. I really love this particular make and feel i
can have a good deal for it in my neighbourhood, can you please explain some more about
how and who used it. I have already seen on the advertisement, but wouldn't mind knowing
more about an advert placed online...
How it was used and kept well is really
important for me to know because I am not in a good state of health to come to see it
before purchase so, I'd really appreciate a well descriptive description about its present
condition and the {least price} that it will be sold for. I would also appreciate if you
could send more pictures of it.
Get back to me as soon as possible to avoid
further delay in the purchase, you don't need to worry about the delivery to my location
because my shipping agent will be ready for coming to receive it once payment reaches
you.
You can contact us on this line +44 70359 16387, but it is better if you
could send me e-mails because I might be busy to pick my calls......
Hope to hear from you as soon as possible
Best regards

I bidded then asked if collection was a possibility
but, without explanation, they cancelled my bid and, after I asked why, they told me
strictly no collection and PayPal wasn't working so would need to be a bank transfer (I
asked nothing about payment).
Could be genuine, maybe a newbie, but I've been
using eBay long enough to suspect this could be a rat.

Has anyone got any had dealings with foreign buyers who contact you by phone?
I've got a few bits in Readers Ads at the moment and I've just had a phone call from a
Scandanavian country, from a guy with, not other words for it, an African accent. He
asked about one specific item. I told him that it was still for sale and he said that he
would have someone in the UK contact me. He then mentioned that he'd seen that I had other
stuff and he would see what he wanted from that and that I should expect a phonecall
soon.
I've read about the e-mail scams, but I've never heard about anyone using
the phone.
At the moment, I'm waiting for the call from the UK guy, but my
spider-sense is already tingling.
It could be legitimate, but it's strange
enough to get me to post on here.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
SB.
