Sorry -- yes quite right, 33 in middle. Couldn't read my own notes!

I'm using an Mbox 2 Pro and interested in improving the sound quality of my recordings. I'm not satisfied with the Mbox's DI sound on electric guitars and basses and the lack of sufficient gain for a ribbon mic. I've also heard many folks complain about the poor quality of the Mbox's pres and A/D converters. This is my first digital recording interface, so I don't have anything to compare it to. I'm wondering whether a better preamp and converter will make an audible difference.

Along those lines, the Audient Mico has caught my eye. If I understand correctly, I could use the Mico pres and converters, run the S/PIDIF out to the Mbox's S/PIDIF ins, and bypass the Mbox's pres and converters. Is that right?

The big question is, will it make an audible improvement in the sound quality of my recordings? I suppose that's impossible to say in the abstract. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks.

Hugh, thanks very much for your succient yet illuminating response! Can you offer any thoughts about how the Audient Mico would compare to the DBX unit (sorry, I forget the model number) that also has two mic pres and A/D converters? It would seem like the primary alternative for these functions.

Depends what DBX unit you mean. Something like the 386 for example is a much more coloured, characterful preamp, which gets more so the harder you drive it.

The Mico is primarily very clean and transparent, although the HMX control does allow it to do character and coloured if you want it to.

The Mico is more versatile and flexible. The DBX has a pleasant character if you like that kind of thing, but it doesn't do clean and transparent particularly well, so it depends what you want.

You should be able to get the digi002 to slave to the S/PDIF out of the Mico.

So yes.

Hugh, yes that's the DBX unit I was thinking of. I record a lot of acoustic instruments, so clean is important. Thanks again very much for your thoughts.
