I never finished off here - so I'll do so by saying I got a Kensington Expert Mouse (trackball, really) and after a few days of use I seem to be getting on well with it. I've got the scroll wheel working on vertical by default, and in combination with Shift it work horizontally. My only complaint is the roughness of the movement of the scroll wheel, but otherwise it's a nice device and worth the money I think.

Perhaps I'll try a trackpad later...
