UAD-2 satellite duo firewire DSP accelerator new
      #1002671 - 09/08/12 11:06 PM
Anyone using one of these?
Pretty sure I'm gonna get it since it seems well worth the price.
I Also saw the UAD-2 solo /laptop DSP accelerator. Any one used it? Is it comparable to the firewire version?
I costs less and seems convenient cause you don't have to use any of your firewire bandwidth.
Though I'm actually having trouble finding a place to buy it.

-Cheers.

The Solo/Laptop is discontinued because not many computers have PCIExpress slots any more, although you can use them with the thunderbolt Sonnect to PCIExpress adaptor.

Loads of people use UAD cards, the plugins are fantastic, though it's by no means an inexpensive option these days.

Really good kit but make sure you have plenty of money left to spend on plugins
(plate reverb is really good)

I have just moved from UAD1 PCI to the Satellite and so far no issues with the firewire etc.

I had to upgrade as UAD stopped supporting the UAD1 card with updates. So I would say as the Laptop card has been discontinued go for the satellite as its more "future proof", Mac only at the moment though I think.

There are some excellent sounding plugins on the UAD platform, I genuinely find them very handy and some are unique, but make sure to read this before deciding which card to buy:

UAD Instance Chart

As you can see in the link, the tendency has been that the newer plugins are very power hungry and even a Duo card is now relatively underpowered CPU wise. These are some examples of what you can expect to run:

Massive Passive = 2 stereo instances
UA 1176 Rev A (Classic Limiter Collection) = 12 stereo instances
Studer A800 Multichannel Tape Recorder = 12 stereo instances
Neve 33609 Compressor = 8 stereo instances.

Halve all of the above if you buy a solo card

I have the PCI solo by the way

Thanks Strangy.
Excellent info. I suppose i'll stay away from the Manley for general mixing and use the sonnox eq.
cheers
