If you were buying a stereo matched pair which would you choose from Beyer 930 or AKG C451
and why? Or is it really 6 of one and half a dozen of the other? My primary
preference is for the Beyer ......

From those two, I think I would go for the Beyer - at least it's a true condenser and not
an electret like the current C451. There is a PDF review of the Beyer HERE.

Mmm...
Modern MC930 versus modern C451B then for me the voicing of the MC930
wins hands down.
Versus a well-maintained C451EB, I'd still prefer the
voicing of the MC930, but with the CK capsule series vesus a fixed cardoid mike, then I
might have a much longer "thunk" about what options that gave me, particularly as the CK1
capsule was known for its stable treble roll of when moving off axis!

I have a matched pair of the AKG C451s. For what it's worth, they're nice mics. I use
them in a stereo pair (ORTF and XY), and as drum overheads. I don't really like them for
close mic'ing of string instruments, but they're nice in front of a guitar amp and inside
a piano. I've also used them for live mic'ing the sax section in a jazz orchestra.

I've
only used the 451 (not sure which version) on a hi-hat, but I use the 930s regularly for
classical, pop and jazz and every time I'm impressed by the rear rejection and the
smoothness of the off-axis response.

The MC930 is the superior mike in my view, but as the C451EB is a much used
classic I ann trying to point out some of the attractions...

The first time I used a C451e on an acoustic guitar I thought - oh yes, that's what a
record sounds like. That's what you get with an option that is on many famous recordings.
It may not be more acurate or better, but rather part of recording culture.

The Oktava is a fine mic and I agree with the suggestion to have a mono overhead too. I
use a pair of Audio Technica 4033s in Glyn Johns setup and they are excellent. I've used
them in XY too and can't fault them. The 4033 is underrated I think - great for vocals,
anything acoustic, electric guitars....
