Need to learn techniques from a Pro

Hi guys,
I thought I'd post this here rather than the production forum.
I really need to learn some techniques from a good producer/mixer. I've been
pretty much self taught for the past 12 years, and I'm hoping to up my game.
Getting work experience in a good studio seems difficult these days (mainly due to lack
of good studios and vast quantity of students), and I'm well aware of the regard that is
held of courses on offer.
I've got the premises, the kit and the willingness to
learn.
I've recently teamed up with a business partner, and the holes in my
knowledge are becoming more and more apparent. I want to do three EP releases over the
next twelve months, so all the tracks I'm working on at the moment need to be top
notch.
So has anybody got any suggestions? I can go to a UK studio, or I can
fly a producer over here and put him/her up in my dedicated accommodation at my place in
south west France.
I hope that my basic skills (mic placement, recording,
engineering etc) are OK - but I need to seriously improve my arranging, mixing and
production.
We have signed a young artist recently, and will sign one or two
more acts over the next year.
I am running ProTools 7, so it would help to
learn on the same or newer version.
Obviously I will pay.
Please PM
me,
Cheers,
Dan

Being trained by the Elf would be brilliant (and that's a personal recommendation).

I would second that recommendation for Mr. Elf. Just the right guy for the job spec.

With a few of us interested it might be worth organising a workshop.. How does
that sound to Elven ears?..

I'm humbled! This is the honest truth (and I had already contacted SOS about
this, so I have witnesses... ) After a few years of abstinence I *was* going to arrange another of my series of
beginner/intermediate/advanced question/answer 6-person maximum digital
recording/production workshops and announce it here, but the feedback I was getting was
that people preferred one-to-one tuition/guidance/consultancy. If there *is*
sufficient demand for another workshop (or even a series of workshops), then I am happy to
pursue this. There is a beautiful private residential studio I frequent in the heart of
the Lincolnshire countryside that is ideal for the job, so I was going to earmark it for a
few evenings this autumn, but I'm flexible, depending on attendee demographics. So if there genuinely is a desire for me to set up new workshops then let me know,
either here or by PM and I'll make an honest assessment of viability. It's nice
to feel wanted!

Thanks guys for your ideas.
Thanks especially to Jack Ruston who suffered
beyond the call of duty and gave an honest critique of my mixes/arrangements. He
confirmed what I thought - I need some serious skills.
I'm still up for some
tuition, but I would prefer one-to-one rather than a workshop.
I'm flying out
an arranger/keys guy/PT chap to help in the short term.

As I mentioned, I do 1-2-1 tuition, and/or mentoring, either at your own studio, mine, or
a hired facility (which I can arrange).
If you're interested, just PM me.

Having recently jumped on the bandwagon with my first mentoring session from the Elf, I
would just like to update this thread to share my experience with everyone on the boards
who may also be interested in this
I first contacted the elf after finding
myself in a dead end with my productions after finishing Music Tech at Uni, and I have to
say that the first of hopefully many sessions has opened the door to a lot more
possibilities with my work and has been a very positive experience.
I think
its rare to find someone as genuine as the elf who is willing to pass on their hard earned
knowledge..a true pro

Aww... shucks, Turntable! Thanks, man! It was a pleasure. You have a nice facility there - and I'm sure you have a
good future ahead of you. Some of your clients clearly do give you some, err... intriguing
problems! The Bunk - I work everywhere both here and outside the UK. I'm
happy to discuss with you if you can't find someone closer to home.

Depending on your chosen genre there are other experts here who offer 1-2-1 tuition in
various areas. I can personally recommend Eddie Bazil (Zukan of this parish), who resides
in High Wycombe, has lots of satisfied students studying in person and via video link, and
visits London regularly.
His web site gives you a good idea of his many
varied areas of expertise:

Thanks, guys! This year it's either a 24u rack full of alternating Superanalogue
and Liquid Channels, or a woolly hat to keep my pointy ears warm. Either is good!
