No 'tools' in Firefox

I have scoured the internet and no solution. I need to turn on/off the proxy setting in
Firefox but the version I have, firefox portable, which has the particular proxy setting I
need to alter, has the menu bar but that menu bar has no 'tools' option
All I
have found ion the internet is customize/show the menu bar, that is easy enough. I can see
display/not display th emenu bar but there is no tools, I have also looked at customize
the menu bar but tools is not amongst the options
Anyone any ideas?

Hi,
type about:config where you normally type in your url. You will get a big
list of settings.
You find the line with the value you want to change and
double click on it. You should a get a dialog allowing you to enter a new value. Booleans
are toggled by double clicking on them.
There is a search field to help you
find what you want to change.
It's like the registry of Firefox. You can break
your installation.

Thanks Ezza,
but that's the whole problem, I don't know exactly what I'm looking for. I got the
about:config stuff displayed, but it seems that page cannt be searched (with the usual
ctrl + f) and even if it did, what do I look for menu? tools? though I tried them and the
search doesn't work

Nah, that's the first place
I went - the Menu bar is there, the tools option isn't, and I have already looked at Menu
Bar/Customization

To turn off set the value of network.proxy.type to zero. Make a note of what it currently
is to turn it back again.

FYI - the setting values are:
0 - No proxy 1 - Manual proxy 2 - Auto
proxy URL 4 - Auto detect for network 5 - Use system proxy
Not
sure what happened to 3.......!

Double click on the setting and a pop-up box should appear for you to type into.

Thanks, so doing that will return the
'Tools' option to the MenuBar? as I seem to remember Tools has a lot more options than
just network proxy

No, doing
that will turn the proxy on and off. I have no idea why the portable version of Firefox
doesn't have a Tools option.
However, they recently changed Firefox so you have
to click on on the button top left to access more menus - have you checked in there?

I have 2 versions of Firefox,
one has the full compliment of Menu items, this I am using now, but the other, which I
need to run from a USB key for work, doesn't. Yep, clicked on the FF Icon at the top left,
and that just gives me the Windows "Restore, Minimize, Close' thingys
