So much knowledge, I'm a numpty ...

I'm sure it's something to do with having absorbed so much useless knowledge about synths
over the years, but I nearly wasted money on something ridiculously simple that just
slipped my mind : I have a KX5 (*) and didn't power it up for many years. Tried
a couple of years ago and it stubbornly refused to play ball. Did the usual (changed
batteries, checked power connections, quick strip and clean) - nothing. So I leave it for
a while. This week I decide I should really ask hereabout where the nearest Yammy
authorised service bod is and, literally as I am typing the post, a vague memory pops up
about it needing to be plugged into a midi device as a safety precaution (stops batteries
wearing down). Surely I tried that ..... come this weekend, one quick check later and I'm
looking at the little red power light and feeling particularly stoopid.. Could be worse ... I could have remembered _after_ sending it off .... (*) Yes - I know that they are cheesier than the whole of southern France, but hey - I
grew up in the 80s when 'cool' was a very distorted thing...

Well done for being so honest Dave - not everyone would admit to being such a plonker, so
good on you mate. You won't be able to hold up your head in public for several
months, but the warm feeling you get inside from being so honest will obviously make up
for this. I applaud you (as well as having a crafty snigger on the side ) Well done! Martin

Well if we're staring an "I'm a plonker" thread... does this count? I spent 10
minutes getting annoyed and upset at two of my mics that seemed to have died a death from
being left in a drawer for a year. I just couldn't get them to do anything, they were
completely dead. I changed leads, tried different sockets on the desk... nothing. ...Phantom Power was off. They're condenser mics.

Yeah .. happened to me in a studio that was left set up for me to record acoustic guitars
in. Engineer forgot to leave phantom power on and I also forgot it - so I changed to a '57
and found that it gave a nice grungier tone to the double tracking we were doing.

I'll see your phantom power and raise you crossed leads Two identical jack leads around the back of a temporary stage in a village hall. Only
somehow I'd got them swapped and folded back about half way so the amp LH input was
connected to the RH input, and mixer LH output connected to RH output. It took me the best
part of a very panicky hour to work out what the problem was.

You omitted a very important pice of information, that's crucial
in providing any kind of support (technical, moral, or emotional).
What colour
is the KX5..?

Ahh the KX5 or should we refer to it as a synth on a stick. Dan

There's always some wierdo who thought that just cos Jonesy ran round with a silver one
that it makes it all ok ... Remember - Jonesy also thought it was cool to were
silver lame suits and baseball boots - or even an orange boiler suit with no shoes or
socks - so we can't use him as a style guru... Remember kids - black is the new
black!

Yeah, but once you've made a record cover with nothing but you and a Jupiter 8 you can
get away with a lot...

Could have been worse. Could have been that
multi-coloured JMJ thing. I think the current Packrat is rather appropriate here

I had a laptop stand that made it look like the laptop had wooden end caps. It can't have been that bad... somebody stole it.

One more plonker instance. Purchased a new telly for the spare room recently. Eagerly
unpacked & set up\tuned in etc ready to enjoy the delights of LED technology & USB
stick recording (Probably of fly on the wall progs that hopefully exclude the dreaded
omnipresent "Pizzicato), only to find it refused to power on. After much
faffing & cursing\ testing fuses with multimeter, i was about to ring the shop when i
found a sly looking switch tucked away underneath with the words "Power) boldly written
next to it.

We have exactly that problem at
work. Some of the tv's can be turned off compleatly with the remote (actually disconnected
form the mains, no standby) and the only way to resurrect it is via a green switch on the
back. The amopunt of people who don't realise the switch is there and say there TV is
broken and you go and check you just press a button and everything works

This reminds me of a friend of mine who has a computer repair business. He
reinstalled windows for a customer who was a consultant surgeon & delivered it to
him.....next day he got a call from the surgeon saying that it wouldn't work. He called
round & had a look at it & found that even though the pc would boot, there was no
display. Reached around the rear of the monitor & pressed the power switch & all
was well. Mind boggling.
