That's why it is
important to use an interface with good solid drivers and a decent reliable DAW.
My personal recommendation would be an RME interface with Reaper. I use a relatively
simple RME 9636 card with ADAT inputs which has worked fine for me for around 10 years. I
also use a real mixing desk which makes it dead easy to set up monitor mixes without
faffing around on the PC - although the newer RME control panel should be good for this
sort of thing too.

Thanks James.
I'm in two minds at the moment.
I like being hands-on,
especially for tracking, but could handle mixing on the computer.
How's the latency
with the RME stuff? Do any of them work in standalone mode?
Anybody know
what are the pre-amps like on the Fireface range?

Some have issues with RME pre amps, I don't make music that requires them so can't
comment, but based on the recent SOS shoot out it seems that most pre-amps are barely
distiguishable against each other. RME Fireface works in standalone mode, once
you have it set up correctly and I frequently use mine that way when listening to my
turntable. Drivers are solid, even when you disconnect another FW device it locks back in
after a few seconds (previous interfaces have dropped out completely). AD
quality is very good as well on my FF800.

GOT to say "NI KA6 innit!" Everything on that list
except ADAT. I have looked on the NI site and they do not make a big brother to the 6
(with ADAT). I reckon if they did and kept the Six's fabulosity they would clean up.

RME Fireface 800 here for ages with Macs/Logic. Accurate sound; good interface. Oh yes, software. Apple Logic is good value. I like the workflow (needs some learning!)
and the bundled plugs are good. worth a look at, Logic. I'm still on v8, never felt the
need to go to the latest version yet! ... Anyone care to bet how soon this
thread gets locked?  ...

example). EQ, compression on every channel, reverb, delay and a couple of other
FX... ...with a half decent PC?

on a 1/4 decent pc.

Just about any PC made in the last 10
years should handle that if you are using Reaper - certainly my 8 year old budget Acer
laptop can. Certain reverbs and modelling effects can be very processor hungry but normal
eq's and compressors take very little processing power.
And to answer your
previous question about interfaces, take a look at the RME Babyface if you want ADAT. If
you don't want ADAT then the Alva Nanoface looks interesting - there's a review in this
month's magazine.

I'm getting a new laptop next week so I'll be able to try it out. I
don't do lots of 'fancy' plug-in stuff.
For faffing around, I was even considering a
simple, two channel line / digital IN unit and use my current two channel mic preamp.
Ideally, a laptop and interface would be ideal, although I would like decent preamps
(2-4).
I have a Presonus MP20 which I could still use but I have no idea how good or
bad the preamps are in all these sound interfaces.
While asking about the Presonus
VSL units, the Presonus guys advised me to keep the MP20 as it was better. How much
better, I have no idea.
If I bought a dual or qad core i5 or i7 PC with 8GB -
16GB RAM and an SSD, we're fine?
