Best Reverb For Solo Piano ???

Hi
Just looking to gain suggestions about what convolution reverb type should
be used for a solo piano album, (slow piano soundtrack type) I've taken examples from
other piano works and the spectrum is wide ranging from small rooms, concert halls to
recording studios. I no it's a case of personal preference but in general what is the
standard environment for recording solo piano.
I'm looking at EastWests
Quantum Leap Spaces CR plugin, can anyone recommend this ?

Look at Altiverb and the Lexicon collection. Altiverb is convolution whereas Lexicon is
that unreal Lexicon sound and I'm a big fan of the latter!

I agree with the above (though Lexicon *still* lack a 64-bit version - hmmm...), but it
depends what DAW you're using. Cubase's Reverence is well up to the mark for a convolution
reverb, for instance. You may not need to spend any money at all!
So what DAW
do you use and what do have available to you already?

I think Reverance is pretty good as well, but obviously it is platform specific.

I don't think there is a 'standard
environment', but in general, I'd go for a largish bright but woody/warm sounding reverb.
A real concert hall convolution space might be a good start, or a nice rich Lexicon
concert hall emulation.

Yes! It definitely contains a number
of impulse responses that would work very well for solo piano, especially if you want
something a bit more characterful and warm than you sometimes get from convolution.
Flux's IRCAM Tools Verb is a very nice algorithmic reverb that would work well on
piano -- much more convincingly 'real' than the Lexicon I think.

Check out Michael Carne's Phoenix - this sounds like a convolution reverb but its not!

I agree - I almost always revert back to a warm hall 'verb from my lexicon, after
trying new settings.

Thanks for the feedback. What would anyones take be on recording the piano position?
options are between Player and Audience, Player giving an upfront feel as if sat at the
piano, whereas Audience gives a more laid back sound as if centered in a room, both are
nice effects.

The engineer I work with ( Shuta Shinoda at http://www.tinroom.co.uk/engineer/ ) has been using a variety of 80s
and early 90s hardware boxes on my piano recordings recently. I recall seeing a a
Yamaha... I think it was a SPX990 and a dodgy looking alesis box. However the mixes
sounded fantastic and really captured the retro vibe I was after.
Maybe
think about linking the reverb to the concept for the collection. A really rich, warm
reverb might not be appropriate for the project or it might be perfect. What kind of vibe
are you after for the soundtrack project?
