Old Mac Running 10.4.11 Question

I've trying to get a Tascam US-144 MKII working with an old Mac laptop. The drivers installed ok and the device is recognised in Audio / Midi Setup, but after I've selected the Tascam as the Default Output and System Output, the System Output reverts to Built-in Audio when I close the dialogue box. Also the volume control sliders for the output are greyed out. Can anyone please advise what this indicates? The Tascam system requirements confirm that 10.4.11 is supported.
