Which DVD 's to Burn ?
      #11306 - 12/09/04 09:03 AM
Has anybody done a survey list on which DVD-R's or RW's are compatable with the various DVD burners in the Macs ( which I think are Pioneer drives). The Apple discs are ludicrously expensive, and many of the alternatives I have tried are just rejected without any message appearing ? I bought an external Formac Devideon, and the same thing is happening, it will burn Verbatim or Maxwell, but not Phillips DVD+RW's ? Is there a reason for all this confusion ?

Use DVD-RW (or DVD-R), almost all of them should work. I don't think DVD+RW (DVD+R) is officially supported by Apple. I've never failed once with -R or -RW. I've actually never bothered trying +R.

Correct, the Pioneer drives in Macs have Apple's own firmware in them which limits the drives to '-' formats. If you update the firmware using either official Pioneer updates, or the region free patched versions, then you should have '+' ability also. This might well depend on the drive though. But the 107 models are definitely '+' capable.
As for blanks, I've been using Verbatim 4X DVD-R blanks. Maplins had these, £15 for 25 of them. Whats more, with the above mentioned firmware updates, I can reliably burn to these blanks at 8X speeds. I know there are cheaper blanks around, but I have not had a dud one of these yet. So they are plenty good enough for me.
