Yamaha AW16G or Fostex VF160ex? new
      #126894 - 09/05/05 02:59 PM
Ok, I'm off to the US next week, and plan on picking up one of the above (they seem to cost the same); but which?

I'm a beginner to digital recording, and plan to use it to record 3 or 4-piece rock and roll bands, mostly live, perhaps with some overdubs.

Advice appreciated! Thanks!

The Fostex standalone recorders were reliable and good to operate but for the all-in-one solution, the Yamahas win.
If you are just a beginner, either would do really.

The Fostex can record 16 tracks at the same time, the Yamaha 8.

4 piece rock&roll band...
5 mics for drums
1 line for bass, 2 mic'ed guitars, 1 line for keyboard(possibly more feeds from keyboards)
up to 5x people singing in separate mics

Well, 8 looks few now, dosen't it? :-)

However 8 of the Fostex tracks are via ADAT and so you would need the seperate interface as well. The cost of the Fostex CD writer is bordering on insane (about £250 I believe).

I think that the Fostex (with cd recorder) and Yamaha are both $800, so it's pretty much a straight comparison. I think that you can record 16 tracks on both, with the right kind of interface, but I could be wrong. I guess I'll have a look at both and see which I prefer.

Thanks!

You can't record more than 8 on the AW16G. An 8 channel ADAT interface will let you do 16 on the Fostex. If you are going to do all the mixing, FX, etc. in the box, get the Yammie. If you are just going to use it to record, and edit on a PC or Mac, I would go for the Fostex.

Garry summed it up... The Fostex has better I/O facilities; the Yamaha has better mixing facilities.

I've not used either, but I'd imagine the difference in pre-amp & converter quality to be pretty minimal.

What about the Tascam 2488?
That's gotta be worth a look. A great deal of bang for buck there.

I have a Tascam 788 which is 24bit / 8 tracks and sounds very good (mic pre's are a bit noisy - need separate, decent pre's).
