Selecting mic and preamp for recording rappers... new
      #129618 - 16/05/05 01:16 PM
I've been recording hip hop for about two years using a borrowed channel strip (focusrite trackmaster) and microphone (Audio Technica AT3035)

I am generally pretty happy with the vocal sound that we get, but i always feel that they could sound just a little better. There's always something a little harsh about the sound that i get and so i'm looking to buy a new mic and channel strip cos the other ones have got to go back.

I have up to about £1000 or maybe even a few hundred more to spend if necessary.
I was thinking about a valve mic or valve preamp/compressor but i don't know if this is the sound i'm looking for.
Any tips from hip hop producers would be most welcome as most of the advice i've had so far has been for singers and i don't know any of them...

thanks

For what it is worth, this is how I usually go about recording rap vocals:

I put a large cap mic (in our case a Neumenn 149, 87 or 103) about a foot or two away from the vocalist and give him (or her) a Shure SM58 with a foam on to scream into as if they were on stage. I record both and mix the 58 into the more full-bodied 149 sound to give it presence.

As for the pre, I just use the desk. As long as it is transparent, it will do the job. Compression and any other effects come afterwards.
