For what it is worth, this is how I usually go about recording rap vocals:
I
put a large cap mic (in our case a Neumenn 149, 87 or 103) about a foot or two away from
the vocalist and give him (or her) a Shure SM58 with a foam on to scream into as if they
were on stage. I record both and mix the 58 into the more full-bodied 149 sound to give
it presence.
As for the pre, I just use the desk. As long as it is
transparent, it will do the job. Compression and any other effects come afterwards.
