Rewring with Logic & Pro Tools new
      #143355 - 15/06/05 02:19 PM
Hi!

Does anyone know if it is possible to Rewire outputs from Logic into the Protools Mixer? I'm using Pro Tools LE 6.9 and Logic Pro 7.1

Thanks!
Iain

I haven't tried it, but I'd lay a small wager that neither Pro Tools nor Logic can act as Rewire Slaves, only as Rewire Hosts. Hence you're stuffed. Presumably you want to use Logic's soft synths and/or effects from your Pro Tools rig?

Exactly - I like pro tools for tracking & Editing but want to use Logic soft synths and MIDI.... I feared it might not be possible... thanks anyway for reply!!

Anyone know of any workarounds or am I stuck with doing my MIDI in Logic, bouncing it, then importing the audio into pro-tools??! Very convoluted!!

It's actually quite simple to get logic and pro tools running in sync on the same computer. That way, all your audio can be played out of tools, and your MIDI from logic using it's great synths etc.
There's basically two ways of doing it - They both involve the use of the IAC Bus (Inter Application Control if memory serves).
Open your Audio/MIDI setup (in Applications>utilities) and enable the IAC bus by clicking on it and enabling it.
Launch Pro Tools and set it up to send MTC to the IAC bus. I can't remember exactly which menu it's in - i'll post again in a minute with the answer.
If you now launch Logic while holding control (to launch with no audio drivers), you can set it up (in the sync menu) to recieve MTC from the IAC bus.
Obviously, you'll have to play tools out from your Digi interface, and Logic from your built-in audio, as both can't use the digi hardware at once.
The above will give you time correct sync, but not bars/beats correct. To do this instead, set up pro tools to transmit MIDI beat clock to the IAC bus, and set logic up to recieve it too - this way, your bars and beats will correspond in both logic and tools.
You can't do bars/beats and time-correct (in terms of timecode) at the same time, but you'll probably generally want to use the MIDI beat clock, as logic ill then sync to your pro tools tempo map etc.

Then, to combine both at the end, just bounce the synths in Logic, and import them into tools for the final mix!

Cheers

To turn on listen to MIDI beat clock in logic, go to file>song settings>synchronisaion settings, and change sync fron intern(al) to Midi Beat Clock

Another way of getting your audio into PT after you'd followed the advice above would be to take the output of your built in audio to an input on your digi hardware. Then set up an aux track with those inputs.

Hi Guys

That's a great solution !
It's something I've always fancied doing with my Logic/PT set up.

Next question.

In OS 10.4.x I believe we can have multiple audio interfaces, so could we have say a firewire audio interface set up for Logic and have that routed into Pro Tools via digital audio cable (most PT interfaces have an Adat Input giving a second set of 8 ins) ?

Thanks for comments

Lee

I can't see that being a problem, but don't forget you'd get some latency from the D/A conversion from the firewire interface-Not sure how much of a problem it'd be though.
Also bear in mind Logic's Plug-in delay compensation when doing any of this - it delays the whole of the mix back to the track with the longest delay incurred through DSP in plugins.
