Hi,

Anyone know, how i could get an information of recording 'what's going on' by marvin gaye? I've been searching for it all over the net and never find any articles.

If you could recommend any links or books that relate to my interest. Please tell me.

Thanx a lot !

Cheers

As usual a lot of opinions & no technical or production info; it's difficult to find. OT but as a Belgian resident I've always found this part of Gayes life fascinating: http://www.songwriteruniverse.com/davidritz.html

hi. there's an excellent book that focuses purely on "What's Goin On" as opposed to Marvin's whole life.
it doesn't go into that much detail about the recording as such (ie what preamps/mics etc) but it is an excellent read.

it can be found here: amazon link

another option, although not strictly about What's Goin On - more about the Motown sound in general is the excellent documentary "Standing In The Shadows of Motown".
it's the story of the motown rhythm section and their quest for acknowledgement on the part they played in the 'motown sound'.
it has extensive footage and interviews about the recording procedure/technique etc. (basically, everything recorded live, direct to 4 track i think..) all done in a pokey little studio with little separation...

it can be found here: amazon link

enjoy!
regards, s.j.

A little OT but a great story I heard about the innovative double leads vocals on the title track.

Marvin cut two takes for the lead vocal but couldnt decide which one he preferred. In the end, he asked the engineer to do him a rough mix with the backing track in mono, and the two vocals panned hard left and right - so he could play the track at home and make instant comparisons using the pan control on his hifi. Only the engineer accidently printed the whole mix in mono, thereby superimposing the two vocals on top of one another.

The engineer realised what he'd done and arrived the next day expecting a rocket, but marvin loved the effect of duetting with himself and announced he wanted to do the whole album that way! Cue much headscratching all round no doubt, but eventually thats what they did.

Read this in Uncut a few years ago - good example of the creative power of cock-ups.

Do a search for some of Bob Olhssons's postings to rec.audio.pro and various other web forums. According to things that I've read, you could put up almost any mic for Marvin Gaye and the magic would still be there.

Cheers.

James.
