Using multi-timbral soft samplers in Logic
      #151078 - 05/07/05 08:35 AM
I’m trying to figure out how to use a multi-timbral soft sampler in Logic. Normally I would insert one in the available slots. But when I want to use a single soft sampler on more than one track, is there a way that I can just use one sampler (thus using it on different MIDI channels) instead of inserting one separately on every track?

You need to create a multi instrument in the environment (new/multi instrument) and cable this to the instrument. Give it a meaningful name.

When it asks you if you want to remove the port setting, hit yes, then uncross the midi channels you want to use on the multi instument icon.

Next select the instrument channel and in the parameters box, under midi channels, select all.

Now on the arrange page, when you select your track output, there will be a new entry in the audio section with the name of your multi instrument and as many midi channels as you enabled.

It's easier than it sounds.

you need to use a sampler that supports multi MIDI channels , like kontakt eg.

Insert is as a multi instrument in an AudioInstrument channel .
Set the MIDI channel to all.
Create a new multi instrument in the environment and wire it to the AudioInstrument channel.

That's it ! It's also in the manual

damn : I was 10 seconds late ..... :-))) ....

Thanks Cliveyboy, I'll give it a try!

Does this also work with samplers such as Sample Tank? How do I go about "importing" it into the Environment, or assigning it to a multi-instrument? (in other words: I'm not quite sure what you mean by "cable this to the instrument")

By the way, if I was to use it on a second tracks, is it simply a matter of cabling the multi-instrument object to another AudioInstrument track in the Environment? And thus cabling the object to as many separate tracks I want to use?

no need to cable more things : remember you just cabled a multi instrument to your AudioInstrument , so from the arrange page you can now select all 16 channels from that multi-instrument and they will all be routed to the same AudioInstrument . Just remember to tick all 16 MIDI channels "on" on the multi instrument in the environment : I believe they are "off" by default

I'm sorry, maybe I should see the whole thing in front of me (@ work right now...). I still have the idea that if I want to use the sampler for drums on one track and again for bass on another, I have to create two audioinstrument tracks. Do I just assign the multi-instrument as an output instead of inserting the sampler in the available slots? Am I still able to use the track on which I first inserted the sampler and cabled the multi-instrument to? Sorry, quite new to all this environmental stuff...

you only have to use 1 AudioInstrument channel and insert your multi-sampler only once as a multi audio instrument . You will now be able to adress 16 MIDI channels of that sampler . The only reason why you have to create a multi instrument and wire that to the audio instrument channel is to be able to adress the 16 MIDI channels . So in your arrange page you can have 16 tracks of you multi instrument (which is a MIDI instrument , not an audio instrument) , and all these tracks will control the same single multi-audioinstrument of your AudioInstrument channel .

Try to look at it this way : the MIDI multi instrument is a 16 channel remote control that controls your AudioInstrument on 16 different channels . You just wire a multi MIDI instrument to your multitimbral sampler .

Just try it out : it's really simple and straightforward

or you could just create a new track with the same multi-instrument on it and change the midi channel from your master keyboard to match the new patch.

There's nothing to it!

You should be more concerned with creating Environment layers with readymade Auxs in to access the different outputs of that multi instrument.

I’ll get back to you on that one….I’m fairly new to all this, I’ll have to take it one step at the time…still trying to figure out how to configure Logic so that I can access the sound module of my synth….I can’t seem to be getting a MIDI out signal…if you have any idea’s on how to fix this, it would be greatly appreciated!

Using internal soundbank via MIDI - how?? new [Re: space rabbit]
      #188815 - 28/09/05 07:51 PM
Finally had time to get this thing sorted out! It seems to work now! Great! Off to making some serious tunes! Check it out!! Jay H on MP3U

Still, I can't seems to get my synth working (I only use it as a master keyboard now, but some of the onboard sound are quite unique and I'd like to use them!)

For some odd reason I can't seem to get any MIDI out activity in my transport bar. I think this is the main problem.... Is it a matter of connecting a new made multi instrument to .....??? HELP!
