Franz Ferdinand - Vocal sound new
      #182202 - 14/09/05 10:56 PM
Hi!

I just heard the track "Jaqueline" from Franz Ferdinand's album, and recognized it's cool vocal sound. Any suggestions on how they got that sound? It can be described as fairly dry, heavily compressed (especially in the low-mid area), and pretty edgy. What came to my mind is that they have bussed it to a guitar amp, and blended it back with the original signal. But there may as well be the microphones/preamps they've used. Any suggestions?

there's and interview with Tore (producer) in a prev issue of Sound on Sound about this very thing. I think Tore's a very good producer (apart from the criminal act with Charlotte Church - spreading wings i suppose) - however the production and mix ethic on FF's first album does have more than a passing similarity to The Strokes first album !! Yet that didnt win awards for production - mind you sold significantly more copies !!

Thanks a lot.

"I'm a fan of rolling off a lot of bass before the compressors because I think they work better when they don't get a lot of bass. Quite often we used the 421 and rolled off a lot of bass using the filter on the microphone. So we had this very, very thin sound going into first the Neve compressor — very heavy, almost distorting — and then the Universal Audio 1176, so we had double compression. The sound you hear is the sound we recorded."
