Not this year. Anyone going to Urban Music Seminar the same weekend? That's where I'll be ...

Matt.

I'm going. Quite looking forward to it actually. I was planning to give the Urban thing a look too.

So how do I get into the hottest gig in town again??

Cheers

Andy

Labels!!!

'Urban' music, as if all previous pop music was 'rural' ?

Who dreams these things up?

Urban indeed!

Sub-urban anyone?

Sory Jim, I was being a bit facetious ...

UMS is the main event for people into RnB, Drum n Bass and like styles of music. Even if you're not into that scene it's worth popping in. It's always a pretty amazing & chaotic event.

I also really like the spirit of the thing. The first time I went, I also popped into In The City, which was the weekend after UMS that year. The contrast was astonishing. One seemed like a vibrant scene of people determined to get their music out come what may and the other more like a bunch of middle-aged blokes bleating about how they couldn't get their records on the radio any more ...

No offence to Andy & Alex but I know where I'd rather be. I'd be going to ITC if the two didn't clash but given the choice I'll be at the noisy one.

Glyn, I know what you mean about labels, but then who really likes them? I think the term came about because it's less emotive that describing those styles as 'Black' music. 'Urban' isn't a great label for it, but at least it doesn't provoke Daily Mail readers into pointless rants about whether there should be a White Music Seminar.

Anyway if you do come along, pop by the 1XMusic stand and say hi. I'll be there both days.

Matt.

I really wanted to go - I have a friend who forwarded me some info about getting on a showcase up there, but as I'm moving house I can't make it... rrgh! Plus I have no instrument to gig on thanks to Nord's UK distribution - can you believe there is not a single feckin Nord Electro 73 in the whole of London? I've been waiting 3 weeks! Anyway, I'll be ready for ITC next year... hope it's good,

Hey Tinhouse

They also have an interactive type forum where various eggheads are going to reveal the secret to digital music success. How could I resist??

Cheers

Okay, this is just blatant self-promotion, but it *is* relevant to the discussion - I'm going to be played on In the City Radio today!! The station is 106.2 FM (or streaming on www.itcradio.com) and it's between 2 and 4 pm... I'm excited!

That is all.

Well done OD... is that linked to anyway for people (prospective managers or whatever) to get back to you, through the web site or something? Or do they give out your email?

Yes, well ... On a related note, I don't know if you saw the interview with Lawrence Lessig in the Media Guardian this week. He has some really interesting things to say about copyright in the digital age.

He takes a creative view and puts his copyright where his mouth is (see the link from there to his site).

Matt.

Andrew Orlowski is quite easily the worst presenter I have ever seen.

He actually made some good points, if you could figure out what they were!

Anyway, he gave me an idea for an invention.

Cheers

Cheers Rob, I didn't hear it but a friend left a message on my answerphone with it playing in the background - cool huh? I don't think they gave out any information about me, so it was perhaps a wasted opportunity in that respect, but it all happened at the last minute. At least in my Les Mcqueen-style middle age I can say I've had a song on the radio - "it's a [ ****** ] business"! (League of Gentlemen ref in case you were wondering)
