What Mic/Setup for recording a Cello direct into Pc ?
      #195209 - 12/10/05 12:24 PM
I'm a total novice when it comes to recording live sound but i'm looking to buy a mic costing no more than around £150 for recording a cello directly into my pc via a Hammerfall DSP Multiface soundcard (1/4" jack or coaxial spdif inputs).

how do i record in stero ? (true left & right stero channels) - is this possible/is there any need ?,or can i just double up a mono channel twice & pan left & right ?.

also do i need a mic preamp,or will recording direct into my soundcard be ok ?

any suggestions/help welcome - thanks !

I'd suggest a budget condenser mic like the sE 1A, for about £70 and spend the rest of your budget on a reasonable mic preamp to feed the sound card..

Alternatively, buy the best dynamic mic you can afford.

For a solo 'cello there is really no need -- unless you want to capture it within a nice real acoustic.

No need to double anything up. You just leave the one channel's pan pot in the centre to feed both the left and right outputs.

Depends on the sound card -- but most only accept line level inputs, so you'll need a mic preamp.

You'll get more repsonses to this thread if you re-post in the Music Recording Forum -- I'd do it for you, but I don't have moderating rights in this forum!

Hugh,

Thanks for your comments - very helpfull indeed.

I'm basically an electronic music producer, but have a classical background & want to do a project involving the two fields.

the idea is to use samples/audio exclusively from a cello.

i'll be using the cello in the traditional sense as well as in a 'music concrete' style recording basically any interesting or usefull sound i can get from the instrument.

would the mic's you recommended still be appropriate for this ?
