Hi, I have just purchased a set of Tannoy reveal active' and need the relevent
speaker cable to go with it. Can anyone recomend the best place to go, i'm using a
firewire 410 and as far as I know my only option for connecting these is via 1/4 jack?? Any help would be great. Andrew

If you want a standard jack to jack lead, pretty much anywhere will have one, from your
local guitar shop to a specialist audio retailer. If you're wanting a balanced trs jack
lead try studiospares or cpc.
However I'd caution against connecting the
soundcard directly to the speakers. You probably want some kind of monitor controller to
act as a volume control. Something like the Samson C-control of Mackie Big Knob

Thanks for the reply.
can I not use the virtual mixer to control the levels? It
would be great to have a hands on control just extra cash, extra cables ahhhh sooo
much money...

I would say that you don't need anything just aslong as u don't obiously have your
"virtual" mixer setup really loud? Why would have a Samson or anything like
that make any difference over how loud the signal is, you can adjust the same signal from
a virtual mixer anyway?

The 410 has a level control on the front panel anyway, which you can assign to any of the
outputs (or the inputs, for that matter) in the control panel. The only problem with this
is that you are changing the level in the digital domain rather than the analogue, meaning
another round of quantisation etc etc blah blah analogue vs digital can of worms etc.
I have a 410 myself, and I run a pair of (passive) Reveals from it, through a pair
of DIY power amps. I was originally using the same set-up as yourself, using the on-board
level control. The problem that I had was that I needed to keep the output from the
soundcard very low all the time, giving me a very small useful volume range. Now I use a
small (cheap) mixer to control my monitoring (with the soundcard outputs at maximum), but
it's very naff (behringer), and suffers from all sorts of channel level mis-matches and
things, so I'm building a monitor controller. Come and see us in the 'Project: Monitor
Controller' thread in the DIY forum if you're interested.

Because there's the potential to end up with lots of noise. Also if you do end up with
everything loud for some reason you'll deafen yourself and possibly damage your monitors.
I wouldn't dream of operating without a 'real' volume control outside the PC.
