Logic 7 clips too easily
      #214763 - 22/11/05 05:14 PM
Does anyone know why this might be the case?

With Logic 7.1 on a G5, Audiophile 2496 PCI soundcard, I find that the output clips really often using plugin synths - either Logic's own, or others. I'm always having to turn down the level of tracks in a way I don't seem to have to with Reason 3 (on the same computer).

What I mean is that if i have say a beat coming from Battery, and then add a bass off one of the Logic synths it's more than likely the output will be a bit distorted if I don't turn down the tracks' levels.

Could it be to do with the level settings in the Audiophile's own control panel?

No. not the audiophile. Just turn everything down - most of the presets etc are just too loud - in a 24 bit system you don't need to run everything at full whack. I think the thing to do is to have a lower individual outputs and leave the master at 0dB.

Logic isn't Reason. There is more scope for getting things wrong (and right).

This has nothing to do with the Audiophile and everything to do with the software summing. If the synths give an output close to full scale then naturally mixing two or more sources together will result in overloading the output. A few things to do is to switch to Pre Fader Monitoring of the Audio Tracks (although overloading a channel won't always result in clipping due to 32-bit float yada yada... it's just easier in the long run) and get used to not cranking the hell out of every plugin. Is Battery giving you too hot levels? There's a volume knob. If you turn every synth down by about 6 dbs (internally) you will have much better mixing levels.

My 2 öre.

I'd love to concur but I'm not sure what you mean exactly..

I had a look in the pdf manual, and it says if you click-hold the send slot, the bus menu will open. I did that and both post and pre are greyed out.. Why would that be?
And any more info on the pre versus post issue? The printed manual suggests that post is best for most situations. I don't know, I'm clueless.

Edit: the bit I read was obviously about Aux Sends, I've now found the Pre Fade Metering option in the Audio menu... Still not sure what it does though. Can't seem to get the principle into my head!

Pre Fader Monitoring does exactly what it says on the tin. It monitors the level of the track regardless of where the channes fader is. ie if you've got a signal hitting 3.4 (in POST fader monitoring) then you could pull the fader down to -3.4 and you'd have a 'clean' (no visible clipping) signal. This would add up over time though to mean very little dynamic range in your mix.

Pre fader metering means that you have to do more work earlier in the chain to change the channels dynamics not just the volume. eg bring the output level of the synth down a few db.

Hope this clarifies a little. May have got a bit lost.

another thing to watch out for -

very few plugs have metering (on the plug itself) so although some might have a soft clip option, using the volume control on the plug itself is prob best as opposed to the track fader.

(assuming of course that you aren't deliberately overdriving the plug's input)

iow you could have no clipping visible on logic's meters whatsoever but still having clipping within a plug.
