Recording Gig From an Audience point of view

I am a singer in a band and hence it is impossible for me to get into the audience to see
how we sound during a gig. I was thinking of recording with a mic (or 2) placed in the
audience. Has anyone tried this who can pass on ideas of the best mics to use,
positioning, etc? I was also thinking of recording the output speaker channels and
playing it back via the speakers later, the only problem here is recreating the effect the
people and the room have on the sound. I do not want to use the recording for a mix,
so there would be no need to split up the instruments/ vocals. Any advice
grateful. Thanks.

Yep, I did this a few years back; 2 AKG C3000's, a Behringer desk and a DAT recorder and
the results were excellent.
The only problem was mic placement, obviously I
didn't want the mic's stolen and, secondly, I didn't want vibrations/noise from the
audience jumping about. I had the luxury of being able to suspend them from the ceiling
about 10 metres away from the stage and this worked really well.

There's a flaw with recording the direct outputs from the PA - you won't record any of the
on-stage sound which is a vital part of your live sound. A simple stereo
recording from a couple of mics a few metres back from the stage will give you some idea
of what you sound like but listening to it quietly at home won't necessarily capture the
whole atmosphere of the gig. I've noticed that small Mini Disc recorders are a very
popular way of getting a reasonable rough stereo recording of a gig. In my opinion there's
no real need to go for anything more complex. Cheers. James.

could go for a single stereo mic like the nt4 or sony ecm m5957 for a cheaper option

I used a couple of PZMs years ago just in front and to the side of the PA cabinets. Picked it up really sweetly. It was a combination of the PA + the backline, which
was what the audience were hearing anyway.

Hi crunchie1967 and all,
I think it's great that you are going to check out
your performance/sound from the audiences perspective.
Just thought I'd say
that it's worth doing this at a few gigs in different venues so that you can gain more
insight. It'll give you more examples of your bands performances and possibly tell you
what different live AE's are doing with your sound.
In my opinion it will help
you when you get to the point of recruiting your bands own live sound AE as you'll be able
to discuss how you want to sound so that they get the FOH mix you'd like for your band if
you aren't in that situation already. If you have your own AE for your gigs then you'll be
able to check his/her performance also.
I know it's not answering your question
but it's food for thought. Good luck with your band.
Regards, bassdude

There's a large and legally dubious scene of 'stealth' recording gigs. Despite the
copyright-infringing activities of many of these people, their methods could be very
useful to you as it's effectively what you want to do legally at your own gigs. A Google
search of Stealth Concert Recording brings up plenty of info.
One common method
is binaural recording, favoured because it's cheap, very 'stealthy' (discreet) and gets
good results. Admitedly it plays back best on headphones rather than speakers, but that
should be fine for your needs.

Thanks everyone, some excellent suggestions (especially the stealth one). I think I am
going for the hanging from the ceiling approach first (the mics, not me).

Aw - come on. I'm sure you're not that bad. Forget the music...
You're young and have so much to live for.
