Rearranging & extending an audio file in Cubase SX

This is something Djs use to do in the 70s with Tape. Take a straight forward record and
make an extended version by looping some sections a few times and adding a few extra
bits.
What is the best of doing this in Cubase SX? I could use an audio editor
like Wavelab / sound forge to slice up the file into differnt sections but that seems
rather fiddly. I can recall there was a way of doing this in Vst 5 by chopping up the
arrangement without actually cutting up the audio file. Was it using something like Q
points?
I know that SX allows one to do things that ReCycle can do although I
still prefer using reCycle for this sort of thing..
This is probably somthing
in the manual on this so if someone knows then just point me to relevant section.
Many thanks.

The simplest way to do this in Cubase is very easy indeed:
Put your audio
file on a track in the project window.
If the track has a steady tempo, it'll
make life a lot easier if you set the project tempo to match the file, then the bars and
beats in Cubase will match the real bars and beats of the file. There are several ways to
set the tempo.
Click the button near to top to switch snapping on. Set the
snapping value to bars or beats (which ever is easiest to work with).
Use the
scissors tool to cut the file into the sections you want to work with.
Drag the
sections around the page to arrange them as you wish. A handy hint is that holding down
ALT as you drag will create a new copy of the clip you're dragging.
None of
this editing affects the original audio file.
SX3 has a new feature which
allows you to define sections of a song like Chorus, Bridge etc and set a play-order,
which will make this even easier, but if you're working on a single stereo file, it's dead
easy as it is.

Thanks Matt.
I knew it was realtivly easy and straight fwd, just could not
rememeber how to do it.
I assume that once I have the new arrangement I can
create a new audio file of the new arragment?

Yes, just like mixing down any other song in Cubase, via the Export/Audio Mixdown menu
option.

A couple more tips that might help:
If you're setting the tempo of the project
to a fixed tempo, go to the transport bar and select Fixed rather than Tempo Track.
Once you've got the tempo matched, switch off snapping and shift your audio file
along until the first proper downbeat is right on the start of a bar. Then switch
snapping back on. Then the bars/beats in the project will match the bars/beats of the
track properly.

Is it me or is SX a lot more difficult to create loops with than wavelab?
What
I like doing sometiems is creating a smooth loop from parts of a track. In wavelab this
is realtively easy to do, highlight the section to loop an dclick the loop pllayback
button. The difficult part is choosing the begining and end of the loop so that the join
is not noticeble. Wavelab allows me move the start and end points in real time while the
loop plays.
With cubse I haev to set the region to loop the match the region in
the audio track. I spent ages on friday trying to loop a bit of atrack that in wavelab
was done in minutes.
Now, I could chop up the track in wavelb and then piece it
back together in SX but this is frought with problems.
Am I missing something,
or is there a feature like this in SX that I ned to read up on. Do I have to delve in to
that pile of papers called the manual. if so, where abouts?

figureed it out. use the loop mode in the audio editor. that way I can adj the being and
end of the section to what I want. still easier in wavelab....
