Are drum sample CDs processed much? new
      #21923 - 26/09/04 01:52 PM
Are most drum sample CDs processed/mastered with nice hardware, or are they generally raw drum sounds?

I find most are over processed, not leaving you much room to do your own thing with them without the sound becoming over cooked.

i made a few drum libraries for yamaha, and i processed merry hell out of it... EQ, comps, limiters... whatever was needed really.

you tend to have to do this stuff to make drums sound like drums. cos they don't on their own.

Thanks. I suppose I'm looking for some that sound good off the shelf and just need a few tweaks, for when I just want to grab a nice hit.

I think I'd dispute that... in a very pedantic but well meaning way

Raw recorded drums (assuming well tuned and miked) sound exactly like real drums. The problem is that it is no longer fashionable to have a real drum sound. Modern pop music (ie. all modern music genres) relies on heavily processed drum sounds for the wanted effect. Consequently, most of the drum samples I've come across are fairly heavily processed.

It seems only some traditional jazz and light classical music still retains anything like real drum sounds these days...

i think the problem is with the drums themsleves ! someone should make a kick drum that sounds more like a nice sub thud, rather than an old waitrose cardboard box being hit with a wet fish...
