Anyone heard of Neumann mics??!!??!!

Right, ummm embarrassing post coming up here! I looked at the word 'Neumann'
the other day and thought....hmmm I wonder if I’ve been pronouncing it properly. I’ve realised that whenever I’ve said Neumann I seem to get funny looks, there is no
way that that many people hadn’t heard of Neumann!! OK so how the hell is it
pronounced?? I confronted my mum (she's never heard of them but she's a copy editor so I
thought good place to start!!), she pronounced it "now-mann" (not how I pronounce
it!!)...... this got me thinking further, it could be any of "now-mann", "ner-mann",
"new-mann", "ney-mann", "nor-mann!" and now I’m just a "confused-mann" I
have been pronouncing it "new-mann" for as long as I can remember and thus far no one has
directly said....ummm its pronounced ".......", so my long and drawn out question to you
people is, how the hell do you pronounce Neumann!!!! This
has been driving me gently insane for the last couple of days! Cheers Doug (oh and please dont mock me toooooo much!) :crazy :

You are pronouncing it correctly as New-Man or at least thats how i say it. They do some
very very nice microphones, especially the U87

Zir Lurkalot iz raaaight! Germans would pronounce it noy-mann, with a short and sharp a.
Or you could just write it on a piece of paper and pretend you're hard of hearing...

Whenever one of my foreign friends asks if they are pronouncing something correctly in
English. I always tell them to ask a Geordie. You have to go to Inverness to get it
perfect though.

What about Røde? I suppose since they use the slashed O it's a Danish or Norwegian name
originally, and in that case it should be pronounced Rerde, where the 'er' is the sound
found in 'merge'.
I guess the English would just say 'road', no? What do the
aussies say themselves?

Seeing as Røde
like to use ‘NT’ in their mic numbers, I would guess Røde is pronounced as in
‘Rodent’

Suffer all you brats xD trying to correctly pronounce foreign words... yeah you
anglosaxon parrots buhhhh will be the target of laughs and humiliation when getting into a
studio or shop and ask for a Newman(noiman...numan.. :S), a Ramirez nylon string guitar or
Bartolini pincups. The fact is that there is no point in being pedant, most
people will understand you whether (ups... weather? wether?? agggg) you pronounce
"newman" or as a German would say "noyman" as someone said before. In fact, English is
quite more difficult to pronounce or read than many other languages (apart from very few
exceptions, an "a,b,c..." will always sound the same) like Spanish (mine, Italian or
German. So don't worry, as I don't mind saying Shure, sure, shoo,
Sennheiser, Sennhaiser, Ibanez or Ebaneth... . By the way, for all who want to know the correct pronounciation (a bit difficult to
translate on "English way of writing" without phonetic symbols) Ramirez--->
Ra (like Sun God) - me - reth(like in wealth) Bartolini-> Bart (with the "r"
sound) - oli (oligophenic) ni For all who want more
details.... In Spanish and Italian vocals are always pronounced the same
whether they are in diphtongs, triphthongs or not: a --> similar to gut, cup
e --> similar to bet, pet i --> similar to si-mi-lir :P o -->
similar to cop, top u --> similar to put, bush German is the same,
except when dealing with diphtongs: ie -> long "e" sound like bee, tree ei -> like like, Mike (Sennheiser) eu -> like coil, joy, boy (Neumann) ä -> the same as "eu" rule ö -> like joke, coat.. ü ->
like twins, quiz ... Hope this can help, you Saund on Saund readers

Neve definitely like Peeve. Since I know someone by that name and that's how he
pronounces it.
I always said Noy-man (learned a bit of German). They understood
me well enough to sell me one.

Ibanez comes from Japan, was just a kind of joke, showing how it would be
pronounced in Spanish (BTW, there's a common surname in Spain, Ibañez).

danish... but merge is close.. but my guess is Røde dont know that either and since its
their company i guess their pronounciation is correct...
since i knew neumann
is german i've always said noy-mann.. funny thing is, at the same time i've allways called
neutrik new-trik

Just had a peek at the Røde website. It says nothing about the name, but the funny thing
is that the people who founded it came from Sweden where they don't use the slashed O,
they write it Ö (same vowel, the 'er' in 'merge' or 'ö' or 'oe' in German).
Maybe Paul White might enlighten us?

that slashed O ( "theta"? as i recall ) is commonly the symbol used to indicated phase on
consoles and Mic pre's that offer switchable phase orientation.
Perhaps Implying that the RodeNT range is sailing against the wind of typical mic
manufacturing "phase"
or perhaps being phase inverted RodeNT s they're Not

German's pronounced as it's written (according to my ole German teachers) - there's no
problems with coughs and boughs, like English. So it's NoyMan for me! Rode is
road - as per how the dude from Rode pronounces it, in the video on their site, for the
VideoMic. Moog has to be Moog not Mogue, cos that just sounds so naff and
inverse mockney to me (And btw - Theta in Greek has the slash running horizontally across the 'O' bit, not on
an angle, and is usually used for temperature related physics stuff isn't it?)

I hate to be a boring git, but that's not the same letter. Theta
is Greek, slashed O (I call it that because it's called oslash in HTML) features in Danish
and Norwegian (and Swedish in the form of 'ö') alphabets.
Anyway, not really
relevant to the pronounciation of Neumann, I guess.

Fi (located between Y and X
– and yes they are in that order) is Φ (uppercase) φ (lower)
The ø symbol doesn’t appear in the Greek alphabet.

One greek alphabet

Closest to the

Oh and theta is (more often than not) used for angles
Oh and vote for noy-man, road, new-trik and moo-g (as in noise cow makes!)
