Radio interence through my monitors. Can anyone help? new
      #237096 - 15/01/06 08:20 PM
Artnoon! Just wondering if anyone knows how I can get rid of a very quiet, yet incredibly annoying radio signal from my monitors? I have behringer truths and there is a constant low-level interference. Thanks, Schoo

Do they have a balanced input?

If so, make sure the XLR case is properly shielded.

You and the missus into the vino again, John?

WHOT?!?!?! Say it ain't so!!!

(Sorry, shoo . . . couldn't resist. I know it isn't very helpful. )

Welcome to the forum, though, and I'm sure there will be a few folks along shortly to offer suggestions if John's suggestion doesn't fix it. I remember someone else having a similar problem some time back with some Roland monitors . . . I don't know if we ever found out what fixed the problem in the end, though.

Its Soo!

Have you checked your leads, and the power leads are properly grounded. Try a different source to determine wether its the speakers, or whats feeding them..

Good luck Soo... Laurence

If memory serves, this isn't the first thread we've had about B Truths suffering from RFI. I'm pretty sure we have had several other occurences of this, with no cure found other than selling the Truths and buying something better.

... or did I just dream it

Was that the same dream you had where every forum user had fitted acoustic treatment in their studio, tracked down and eradicated every single ground loop in their wiring, and bought PMC speakers?

Cheers guys!! Will try those suggestions. We also got RFI through a couple of different electric guitar pick-ups. And the Harbingers, I mean Behringers aren't that bad! A world away from our old yellow KRK's with the blown speaker! In fact, we did a session the other day with a 19 year old girl with a truly stunning voice and realised that every step of the recording chain was Behringer! And it sounded lovely. Cheers peeps. LOL. Love the comparison, tho. Class.

(I know I should be ashamed of myself for taking the piss and not being helpful at all. Do note that it's all in good fun, and we all understand the position of operating under budget constraints -- and that includes myself in particular.)

Do try to isolate the monitors and see if you can verify whether the problem is indeed the monitors or perhaps the RFI is coming in through the cables or some other place.

Also, are your monitors plugged into a surge supressor that has RFI filtering? It sounds like you must have a radio broadcast tower somewhere nearby. It is also possible that your mains wiring and/or the power input cord of the monitors are acting as antennae. Any info you can supply is with *may* be helpful.

Hope you can get this sorted. It will be great if you don't have to replace the monitors, but, as has already been said, it also won't be surprising if the problem is indeed the a result of typical Behringer engineering not being particularly tolerant of less optimal environmental circumstances.

If it turns out to be an unrepairable problem, perhaps replacing the drivers in the KRKs might be (or have been) a better option? Just a thought.

You checked the RFI isn't being picked up on the input stage?

If it is, its pretty easy to built a little RFI removal box with all of 3 components!

I'm just a year into my DIY ELectronics bits'n'bobs - but isn;t one of the solutions to this is to add a inductor somewhere in the signal path

Canford Audio do little in-line RF filters - XLR-3F to XLR-3M - very useful, I have 4 in my kit.

Normally a choke, and then a small cap across the two lines...

If you fancy going a step further its pretty easy to add a isolation transformer as well.

I had the same problem with a pair of Event TR5s and it drove me absolutely round the bend! After all manner of faffing about, the solution for me was actually just a bit of cable management - if the audio cables went anywhere near power cables or the case of my Mac, it was instant Radio 2, but they're nice and quiet if I keep them well clear.

The general rule with power and audio cables is cross them at right angles.

only if you really have to cross them or keep them at least 50cm apart left/right or above and below it does´nt really matterhttp://www.soundonsound.com/images/forum/icons/smirk.gif
