Cubase or logic for scoring ? new
      #241705 - 23/01/06 11:25 PM
Hi! I'm a composer, work with cubase and my work is song writing. Now,I look toward scoring for picture.
I'm wondering if logic as more integreted fonctions for scoring, composing for tv,film... than cubase.
Any advices ,preferences or even cathegoric answers ??
thanks.
m.

Never used the Cubase score facilty but I've done a lot of scoring in Logic and it's a pain. I understand that Cubase is not a lot better!

All the reports I hear are that for serious commercial scoring work you want to be using Sibelius or Finale....

mmmm,

logic is far from being intuitive for scoring, in the way that I've found Sibelius to exel; though, to qualify that, I gave up trying to get the score function in Logic to produce meaningful results, after ver. 5

Things could be very different now - however, with the amount of other stuff that's been intorduced into Logic recently, I can't see the programmers at emapple having much time to overhaul an unloved aspect of their programme.

I do know that there's a hard core of users over on the Apple Pro / Logic forum that would dispute what I'm saying, including a couple of successful London based media composers - try posting there and see if you can get them to give you the other side of the argument.

I second what Steve says - try the Sibelius / Finale route, if you're serious about scoring.

I have logic pro 7.1.1 and its no better than 5.0 for scoring, its still a pain in the arse. Its really akward. Sibelius I have heard is a little better for scoring but still not very good.

I thrid sibelius, I use sibelius for all my scoring as its just SOOOOOOOO much easier, if you want professional results.

I use Logic for sequencing and Sibelius for scoring(sometimes).

I believe it is largely a matter of who your product is aimed at.

Logic (and I presume Cubase) has the advantage if you are writing quickly and are only in need of producing written parts for musicians who need a printed score to perform. If they will not be too fussed about some of the dynamic markings, you can explain to them what you are looking to achieve (in person) and they will write in their own cues and dynamics. Sometime the results are not pretty but at least the job can be done quickly. I have played in quite a few bands and orchestras and I find that must players are not too fussed as they often have to play from 20 year old illegible hand written scores!

Sibelius is much more of "create a beautiful score" for the more fussy amongst us (and if you want to have some music published or cataloged for posterity).

Unless you are competent in music theory and are happy writing (or clicking in) notes on a stave, Sibelius will be a bit of a learning curve as the live record feature for inputing in real time via a midi keyboard is a pain. It will be an overkill for someone who is a midi-musician who wants to create parts quickly.

Note also that Logic has improved its "writing for picture" facilities in that iit has video tracks in the timeline and facilities to synchronise the two. I believe that Sibelius Version 4 also has beefed up in this area.
