firewire ground loop & laptop prob new

Hi

when i use my m-audio project mix with my laptop i get a constant, very loud hum/noise - this only occurs when i have the laptop plugged in and disappears as soon as i unplug the laptop.
I was aware that this problem might occur but i'm f**ked if i can remember how to cure it - i don't want to disconnect any earth wires in the plug,
i'm sure there was a mod i could do to the firewire cable to solve this - but what?

You didn't say what laptop you're using. I use an Apple PB and an M Audio 410 and the 410 is powered by the 6 pin firewire port, if you plug the 410 into the mains you get all this noise you mentioned. Don't know if this helps.

DI the output of your soundcard and ground lift it, this problem is well documented in the Computer Music section....
