powerbook random crashes new
      #245382 - 30/01/06 11:28 PM
I'm fairly new to the world of mac, I got a powerbook in early November last year......

Periodically it crashes, sometimes the screen goes dark and I get the multi lingual message: "You need to restart, hold down power button...." Other times I try to shut down and it freezes, it seems to turn off but then the power light comes on almost as though it is asleep, and I can still hear the fans/hardisk whirring away, and it won't wake up.

I have an incling that it all relates to dodgy drivers for my dodgy BT ADSL modem, how could I find out for sure? I've looked at console after the crashes but I don't really understand what I'm looking at.

I'm guessing I'll just have to uninstall suspect drivers/software until I can't replicate the crash, I'm hoping there is a simpler way though.

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Try this:
Applications/Utilities/Disc Utility/

highlight your hard drive and press "repair disc permissions".

This usually helps.

I should've mentioned, I already repair permissions regularly and it hasn't helped. I managed to track down a new driver for the modem today so hopefully that will solve my problems.

Thanks for your help.

Could well be your modem.

USB ADSL modems are well known to cause problems with Macs, especially sleep related problems.

I use to have an Alcatel jobbie that used to give me kernel panics (the multi-lingual grey screen you're seeing) on a regular basis.

I've had a recent Powerbook for almost a year now and have never had a single crash (well, apart from Logic!)

Best bet is to dump your USB modem and get a wireless ethernet one, available for about £50 now. Once you try wireless you'll never go back.
