I've just ordered a G5 from the Apple Refurb Store, and I hope other refurb customers can
answer a couple of questions:
1. Does the G5 come with the software disks for
the pre-installed programs? 2. Are any of the bundled accessories, which you get when
you buy *new*, included? I.e. vga/dvi adaptor, keyboard etc.
Thanks in advance.

You get the software.
No keyboard, no mouse.
Get the little Airport
attena they try to charge you £30 for if you lose it.

Hmmm... are this not things you should have checked be-fore you gave them your money?? My
best guess will be, its a full package but with a refurb processor. Good luck.

They havent got my money just yet! The T&Cs arent that clear on what comes with the
package. I just wanted some clarification from refurb users, I'm not too bothered about
the lack of periphirals at this stage.

I got a G5 of the referb store earlier this year. It came with everything-
Keyboard/mouse/all the software on discs and all the documentation. And the warranty! Great way to buy in my opinion. A few years ago got a 12" PB the same way.

The refurb units contain whatever they were originally sold with. So if someone supe'd up
a system on purchase and then returned it due to a problem that was fixable then they'll
resell the unit in the exact state it came back (just fixed).
They advertise
the minimum that you will receive and then send whatever system comes to hand that AT
LEAST matches the system you bought through the refurb store.

Yes, contrary to info above, you get everything you'd get with a brand new machine
(including mouse/keyboard) and perhaps a little surprise if you're lucky!
I've heard stories of people receiving free upgraded graphics cards, extra drives, loads
of RAM, etc. Alas, I wasn't so lucky but I did get what appeared to be a brand new machine
for about £350 less.

Bought a 15" PB last year this way and came as a complete package with everything you
expected including all leads, manuals, packaging etc and a full warranty.
A
good way to buy. Saved hundreds!

Never brought a computer from the refurb store, but I got an iPod there when they brought
out the 20 and 40 gig ones with the click-wheel. No problems, it came with everything.
Discs, cables, extra gubbins.

I've bought several refurb's.
They come complete with boxes as originally
sold. Except for a few scuffs on the packaging and maybe some opened software envelopes,
you wouldn't know the whole package wasn't new . . .
Software-wise, the
refurb comes exactly as a new one would. OS pre-installed, waiting for your
personalization, plus CD's/DVD's in the box.
Keyboard + Mouse included, often
cellophaned.
Oh yes - one G5 I bought came with an extra 1GB of RAM . . .

My 2Ghz G5 iMac came as a complete package but with single 1GB Ram instead of 512 plus the
option Blue Tooth and Airport cards fitted.
Mac Mini came as a complete
standard package.
As far as I can see they are always complete packages, often
already customised, but you don't have the option to customise further.

I have to put my two cents in here: I bought a refurb G4 Powerbook last year
that came complete with a bent latch, deep scratches on the underside of the case, and a
screen that looked like it was scrubbed with a soiled washcloth. I wasn't expecting a new
computer, but I also did not expect something that looked obviously used, possibly
abused. When I placed the order through the Apple Store, I was reassured that
the computer would be cosmetically "good as new" and that all the parts go through a
rigorous cleaning process. I ended up with something that looked liked it was unloaded by
some crackhead on Ebay. Maybe not even that good... I didn't think it was
worth the nominal $200 discount. I went ahead and exchanged it for a new one and got a $75
credit for my trouble. You definitely get what you pay for. I heard many more good
experiences than bad ones, but in my case I don't think it was worth it. Quote blueintheface:

I have always purchased refurb Macs. They come with the complete package in every case I
have seen, but Apple seem willing to fix anything that isn't right. I did have to
reinstall the OS on both my current PowerBook and G5. I suppose that may just be bad luck,
but once I did, both machines worked beautifully. The only other thing was my PowerBook
had an intermittant issue with the right-hand shift key. Apple replaced the keyboard for
me in a day. I did find an extra 512Meg in my G5 when I set it up, though. Woo hoo!

I just noticed today that the UK refurbished store is now open every day from 11am. It was
also interesting to see that they have a large range of stock, including current models -
the older models all have 24hr ship times but the current models have 8 day ship times. It
looks to me like they may well be trying to offload new, possibly unused, stock through
the refurbished store.
Certainly judging by reports ( http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0601intelearly.html ) there appears to
be a big drop off in Mac sales after introduction of the Intel machines. If I was in the
market for a new G5 I certainly wouldn't be getting it from the normal store, but taking
advantage of the ~20% discount from the refurbished store for, more likely than not, a
brand new machine.

I ordered my Quad from there today, at £1840 it was too good a bargain to miss,
considering I almost bought one yesterday from the local dealer!! Almost £500 saved, glad
I waited for the refurb store to open! And yeah, it is open every day, they're definitely
getting rid of stock.

Can't really believe this, but I've just had an email from Apple saying that my Quad has
been shipped and will be delivered in 2-3 days time! Considering it says on the site that
shipping would happen in 8 days time, I'm amazed!! Only ordered it yesterday!! Happy
happy!
btw, both Dual Core G5's, the Quad, and the older 2.7DP are all still
available today.

Apple have been very efficient with my order too. Ordered Monday, should have been
delivered today BUT some UPS incompetence got in the way. They attempted to deliver to the
wrong address, I have now put my trust in a UPS call centre operative to correct the
address details. Hmmm. I will be phoning first thing tomorrow to check where they are
dispatching to!

So the Quad arrived yesterday, and I've been getting it set-up today. But on start-up it
sounds uncannily like a very small tractor, and once booted up the fan(s?) are still very
noisy. I take it this isn't normal?

i had UPS lose a computer for a year!
i kid you not.
shipped it from san fran to london....
i called the uk call center. sorry we
have no way of tracking that, you'll have to call the american number. ok, 1-800 numbers
can't be dialed from outside the states...
this was one of the most disturbing
and surreal episodes i have ever experienced in my life.
UPS sucks.
whew, i can't believe how short i kept that!

This fan is unbelievable. I tried the SMU reset switch, then called Apple Support who
talked me thru the PRAM and NVRAM resets, but still no joy. Apple Hardware test says
everything is hunkydory, except it can't run a test on my ears. I'm going to buy a decibel
meter tomorrow just to see how loud it is!!

Average of 64dB once booted up with nothing open, and peaks at an incredible 72dB on
boot-up... That can't be right?!

Hi
Is the inner
plastic door properly in place? There's probably a description about removing protective
door strips before use that came with the machine. The inner plastic door's rear bottom
lug should be opaque with a stick-on patch - this tells the Mac that it it correctly
fitted, and the fans can be slowed down.
Alternatively being booted in
single-user mode (Cmd-S at start-up) disables the fan-control software, so causes them to
run flat out....

Hi, The machine has gone to the local service centre after a long call to Apple
Support. They could've picked it up and sent me a new one but I'm going away for three
weeks and wouldn't be here when it arrived, so this seemed easier... I listened to a Quad
in-store (that had the door open), and I couldn't hear anything above the ambient
noise-level in the shop. Glad I bought the dB-meter, it just confirmed what I knew, and it
was good to be able to give them a specific dB rating, otherwise: how loud is loud?!
