DI boxes for laptop use
      #25329 - 01/10/04 08:51 AM
I wonder what makes a good DI box for eliminating ground loops. Do these budget Behringer type DI boxes do the trick ? Or do they just reduce the quality too much ?

hi,

yes they work, but I've seen several forum posts saying that the transformers in them are "budget" and that does affect the sound. People seem to like the BSS boxes, bit more expensive but sound better.

I use a Behringer one, and it works well, but i have had a few sound engineers put their noses up at it, i am going to buy a new quality one, just for the PC, and keep the others for the Keyboards

If what you want to do is simply eliminate ground hum then a good quality passive will be OK.

An active might be useful in more situations though.

cheers

that is exactly what i'd use them for. eleminate noises when using the power supply of my laptop computer. the sound card is dead silent and very clear when operating on battery power. i need that clear sound to be passed on untouched.
