External sounds for Ymaha RM1X? ? new
      #26162 - 02/10/04 03:58 PM
Hello, i ve been using my RM1X for a few years now, and though its sounds are exellent and still usable, im now bored with these sounds and want some more. What i want to know is, whether or not i could use external sounds from a sound module, and use them with the controls of the rm1x,( ie the pitch bend and filters), and if i could still sequence it all on the rm1x??
Also any reccomendations would be apprecciated, for good organ sounds, ethnic instruments and percussion, and phat drum sounds?

Hi,

I used to have one of these. I, too, found sounds less than inspiring after a while. The sequencer on the other hand, is excellent.

As far as I can remember, the RM1x sends out all MIDI info, so that controlling other devices isn't a problem. However, it only has one midi-port, so you are limited to a total of 16 midi channels, including the onboard sounds.
I used it to sequence and play my sampler, so as long as you are prepared to live with just 16 midi channels, you'll be fine.

Why don't you get yourself a small midi-interface for your computer? You can do your rough sequencing on the RM1x, dump it all ( or even sync it up) into a sequencing program, and tweak it there.
You will only be limited to the number of midi-ports on your device, and can record audio, use plugins etc..

As for a sound module, the Proteus 2000 is very cheap these days, and give you a variety of sounds with excellent tweaking possibilities.

Hope this helps,

Halvard

Cheers Halvard, im not quite sure what you mean by midi interface controller, ive got a standard midi cable from the computer, but it seems a nightmare to brach to the rmlx, i tried using my keyboard with reason, and the sound was happening a good half a second after i hit the note, and no matter how much i tweaked the latency or whatever the option was i could never find a happy medium. ( my soundcard is bog standard) so i have been obliged to record in my sequenced tracks as audio, which is fine but it uses more space, and means i can no longer edit the sounds with the yamaha. What exactly is it that i would need, to have my sequencer and computer running in harmony?
Cheers

Motif rack or if you dont want to spend much money Ultraproteus or any still kicking sound module. Myself moved to RS700 which is like Rm2x + sampler. It would be familiar to you, reads rm1x files too but sounds are better and you have more control. Also 2 midi out so you could easily control more modules. RS7k are very cheap second hand.

When rendering midi to audio, it has it's pros and cons. Obviously, it takes more space, but this is something you just have to live with. It can be manipulated in ways you cannot on the rm1x. You can use compression, effects, eq and so on.
What many people do, is arranging the music more less in midi, then dumping it to audio on the computer for mixing.

The fact that you are using a bog standard soundcard, may be exactly why you have these latency issues. You should probably invest some money in getting a decent soundcard. The Emu 0404 is cheap (around £80) and has stereo in/out as well as midi.
It could also be your computer that isn't up to speed.

I can't remember exactly how to sync the two devices, but on the Rm1x there is something called MMC (or MTC, I forget which)
There usually are options in sequencer-programrs, that allow for syncing over midi. It shouldn't be too difficult to set up, and will result in a) that the program slaves to your rm1x, or b) that your rm1x slaves to your computer.
Whatever suits your needs.

Sorry I can't be more specific.
