New Hard drive question new
      #26558 - 03/10/04 06:09 PM
HI,

I've just bought an additional 80GB hard drive for my PC, which I intend to use for for my music. My question is..

Is is better to run your music software and save your files on the same hard disk drive, or is it just as good running your software on one drive while saving your work on your additional drive?

Im wondering because I dont know wether to uninstall my music software form my original drive and reinstall it all on the new drive..would it make any difference to performance etc?

Thanks

Hi Smithy, FWIW, I have my OS and apps on one hard drive, and data (samples, tracks, etc) on the other hard drive, on separate IDE interface. Separate IDE interface isn't really necessary, it's just a force of habit.
Cheers

I would recommend keeping all your software and your OS on your existing drive (presumably the C: drive) and using the new drive for all your audio files. If you have large amounts of other data (such as photographs) these can probably reside happily on C: or you might want to think about partitioning your drives.

Use Scandisk and Defrag regularly and don't allow either drive to become more than about 70% full.

Back up your audio projects to CD-R or whatever whenever you create something you'd be pissed off to lose. Hard disks can fail at any time without warning!

Backup is very important. A really good dvd writer (NEC, pioneer, etc) can be had for about £50 now. Check out SVP www.blankdiscshop.co.uk, and discs are only about 20p each... There is no excuse....

When a HDD dies, and you have to pay some one to fit new motors and PCB's to recover the data your wallet will feel very empty! and most HDD manufacturers dont cover recovery in there warrenty...

I'd go for Apps and OS on one disc, and samples and work on the other. What make drive did you get?

Warm Regards,
