Opcode studio 128x problem/help req
      #274632 - 28/03/06 11:09 AM
Greetings,
Don't know if the opcode 128x is to be considered vintage, but even if not it would certainly fall into the catagory of "really useful kit- which no tech support is available for!"
My problem...
I have 4 opcode 128x interfaces and want to get 2 of them to hook up to my PC. my pc has 4 serial ports. i have tried running win98 with the apropriate driver-but 2nd interface is never found. I have tried on aonther PC with xp using the xp driver and both interfaces can be configured, but then my sequencing software falls over. If I remove one interface from the 128x config in control panel, then cubase or logic will work fine, but only enable access to one interface's ports. I am led to believe from instructions and help files that multiple interfaces can be installed to one machine... but I canna get it to work.
What am I doing wrong?

Regards
Greg

I can't offer any help, because I have the same problem. I'm using Win XP Pro, which sees both 128X's, but Cakewalk Sonar Producer (have 7, but 5 was the last I tried it on) freaks out like you mention. Have you solved it yet? Doesn't anyone know how to get 2 serial units working?

errr sounds like you're connecting them to multiple serial ports on the PC...

many moons ago, when I had Opcode interfaces, ( 3 x studio4's)they chained in series, as do the emagic AMT8/Unitor8 ones and , if i recall, the MOTU ones....

I suspect you need to connect one to a serial port, then use another cable (possibly the Mac cable) to chain another to it.....

that way the system should simply see one midi interface with a whole bunch of ports.....

and your sequencer should be happier about it.

Woctcha everyone....just came across my post from 4 yrs ago!!

Right to clear this up...

The instructions and help stuff on the 128x and 64x does suggest they can be chained...
BUT
they cant...

Took a lot of trying different stuff and searching the web, but basically no matter what you do it will not work...
The most credible answer I have been given for why is that when gibson took over they stopped development further of the oms software for these units, so basically they never actually could do what was promised in the book...

So there you go...I have now got 6 128x interfaces as a result of my trial and errors...convinced that maybe I had a faulty one or 2 but now they are just used as standalone midi patch bays or are destined for relisting on ebay when I get round to it...

But I have found a system that works with multiple midi interfaces on pC format with XP...
This is to use 2x M-audio midisport 8x8's one connected by usb, the other by serial connection...
This does work 100%...but sadly no more can be added than 2(I have tried!)
but at least this is a solution for us hardware freaks who love the idea of 16 multitymbral synths being midi controllable and only a mouse click away from doing their thing...

Hope this helps someone out there...and if you wanna 128x let me know cos I think I have got most of them!
